Make Christmas Great Again

It annoys me when people try to downplay Christmas to boost other winter holidays up.

Christmas earned it's position as the big winter holiday. Hannakah was a minor Jewish holiday that became well-known because it was near Christmas. Solstice was pretty much a dead holiday, until people with a grudge against Christianity decided to revive it. Kwanza and Agnostica were created in response to Christmas. Ramadan only started being hyped in America during the Gulf War for political reasons.

Without Christmas, New Year's would probably be the biggest winter holiday, but I doubt it would be as big as Christmas is. You want “your” holiday under the winter holiday tent, fine, but Christmas is the tentpole, so don't knock it down.

The problem is simple. The USA is not a christian nation, yet we only celebrate christian holy days. Christianity is a religion that steals other religions holy days. Why, for example, do you have rabbits serving eggs on a day of resurrection if it wasn't stealing the "rebirth/fertility" rituals of pagans along with the hunt for "bread/forbidden foods" of passover? ETc. What we see is a secular nation letting a religion steal the "generic winter" into yet more "Our religion is the *T*ruth", and now you have backlash from the non-christians.

Christianity is not a religion, it is a group name for a bunch of related religions and a large number of the colonies were founded by groups that fall under the banner of Christianity. The Founding Fathers decided it wasn't government's job to tell people what religion to worship. As for Christmas itself, it has expanded past its roots and has many elements that can be enjoyed by non-Christians. I haven't been religious since I was a teen. What is Christian about Washington's birthday, Mother's, Father's, Memorial, Veteren's Days, etc.?

Heh, just do like us up North, we still celebrate the heathen "Yule", just as "Jul" now and we only translate it to "Christmas" because... well, thats English for you... but most people here celebrate "jul" one way or another, just with less or no religious impact... who says no to celebrate with an evening of Family, good food (and added presents for one reason or another)? :)

Well, depending on their family some people might say no to a family celebration. ;-) Christmas also straddles two worlds having both religious and non-religious aspects to it. Happy Yule! :-)

I don't see where the conflict is coming from. People were ALWAYS celebrating this part of year, only it used to be called Samhain or Saturnalia, then Christmas and Hannakah ... I bet when christian missionaries converted some Celtic, Germanic or whatever tribe, it was Samhain one year and Christmas the next and the name was only thing which changed. Isn't the celebration itself more important than how you call it? Shouldn't Christmas be about peace and family? Or is this some "who's not Christian is against us" again? (Also, not sure the holiday was EVER called Solstice. Solstice is more like saying when you are celebrating ...)

... I think Wiccans call it Yule (oh. I see Samhain is the Halloween one. Sorry to mix that up.). Of course it IS celebrating the solstice but it has own name. And if Christmas is only holiday with tree it's only because others weren't so greedy to cut whole tree and used just branches. And, yes, employees banned from saying "Merry Christmas" does sound like some non-christian didn't honored the spirit of this celebration and sued, and the stores don't want it to happen again.

Well, you hear things like stores banning employees from saying "Merry Christmas", or schools calling Christmas trees "holiday trees" (despite only one holiday using such a tree) and things like that it seems more like the tip of an iceberg rather than some isolated incidents. *shrug* I've heard of some groups (Wiccans?) that celebrate Solstice, but admittedly my memory isn't great so maybe they had a different name for the celebration they hold on the winter solstice and I just forgot it.
