I suppose if this joke works at all, it'll probably only work in the USA, as I don't think any other country has a holiday as linked to Christmas sales/advertising as the American Thanksgiving.

Honestly, since it's known around the world, everyone (or almost everyone who would come here) knows what you're talking about, and would get it. Issues arise from things like Canadian Thanksgiving being earlier than the US's, Australia not having it, and the annoyance that Black Friday's creeping into our countries as well.

The world doesn't revolve around America. It's just that America's in your face about itself so much that it's almost impossible to ignore it and it's regular traditions without actively avoiding it, probably by having someone curate your media. In other words, America's not the centre of the High School Hierarchy, they're the obnoxious person everyone knows but few people like who never shuts up about themselves.
