I think the Original Olympics were ALSO hoped to be a substitute for war ... at least war between Greek cities.

Well, I believe the Modern Olympics themselves were hoped to be a substitute for war, by getting people's aggression out through athletic competition. Poor Sports, people keep burdening it with things it wasn't meant to be used for.
