My process for designing Pieces that aren't main characters is to just sort of wing it right on the page based on a general vibe. Then, if one happens to come out good, I'll use it some more later.
I always wondered how headless creatures navigate themselves to characters in fiction. Of course, there are ways to go around the whole no vision, no hearing, etc thing. So if the friends never came back out does it mean they died back at home or they're in a coma or something?
The idea I'm going with is that when you're in here, you're wholly in here, there's no body left sitting at your computer or anything. If you die in there I figure you just don't come back out...
