Yeah, the sheer irony of it I'm hoping shows how blind one can become, and how devastating it will be if they ever dare shed those blinds and see what they've become.
interesting developments. a truly sad story but not so rare for that part of the world and time. orestes shows his own ignorance by calling socialism, capitalism. Arthur does not correct him i guess because he doesn't understand what was being said?
Let's not get into a political discourse. However, nazism, despite having 'socialism' in the name, is a form of capitalism and Orestes is right on that. Which is why Arthur doesn't correct him.
On the other hand it is being revealed only now how much the regular army units assisted in massacres of POWs and civilian "enemies of the Reich" including the Einsatztruppen activity on the Eastern front that killed about half the victims of the Holocaust.
An extremely interesting case is of an SS officer, fiercely loyal to the Reich who during his experience fighting and surrendering to the Americans joined the US Army postwar and fighting in Korea and Vietnam becoming a colonel in the Green berets and more American than most Americans.
There is some evidence of dissatisfaction among Police forces and even Einsatztruppen where they would ask for transfers to regular line units rather than massacres ofb"enemies of the Reich" There's also evidence from POW testimony of hatred and indifference to the party and Hitler's clique but not unfaithful to the Fatherland. And of course the arm of service with the most party members was the Luftwaffe! Many of them were fiercely loyal to the party until finsl defeat but loyal to Germany and helped rebuild Germany postwar forming the nucleus of the Bundeswehr.
That's also precisely how cults work. Happy, stable people don't generally join cults. Desperate people do. Once they have a "savior," their loyalty is unfaltering.
Ok, his ultima ratio is that in the end he was saved as a child by the party to kill other children. His existential experience made him remain aware of this, in order not to simply fall into dull obedience or to fall for the propaganda of the Endsieg. Otherwise, at least, I can not explain his 180° turn.
Oh, and there are a lot of other details and events in his past while he was in HY that he doesn't mention here, which defined him and his loyalty. But these are elements that will become apparent in the next arc, and in the years 1943-1945 (so not in this first one).
That's how it worked for him, that's true! However, as I discuss in tangent yet in the next page, he is by far not the exception in Greece. Which, as far as I can tell so far in my research, IS the exception in all the other occupied countries (i.e. German soldiers switching sides).

I think this is the first story I've seen where the villain's Tragic Backstory (TM) is used to make him look (justly) worse.

Some reading for you, because Nazis were truly insidious on blurring definitions: http://www.cambridgeblog.org/2022/02/capitalism-and-nazism/

His mom is. He, not so much as it'll be revealed later, but it took all this to even have that make a difference.
