I have to apologize for taking a week off unannounced, but last week was extremely gut wrenching and devastating. As you may have heard, on March 1 we had the deadliest train crash in Greek history. A train crash that could have been averted if only our governments did the bare minimum for safety for people using infrastructure. It was a preannounced massacre. I was unable to think or do anything except watch the news.

It happened simply because the government didn't upgrade the safety systems, and allowed the old ones to break down without maintenance due to cutbacks and corruption siphoning the funds to other pockets. So since 2020 the trains were left completely without any digital/automatic failsafes. Cherry on top, the person in charge was put in the position through nepotism, and made a deadly error, putting the trains on the same track.

I'm so sorry about that avoidable tragedy. So many are. (In my job, we don't call anything an "accident." It's always an "incident" and considered avoidable with steps taken to prevent a repeat.)
