Hiya fellow community! My name's Zac, and I'm writing a research paper on whether comic and cartoon art is considered a true art form in the “distinguished art world”. Why am I telling you this? Because I don't have time to call Marvel or DC or the AP for permission to use their comic images in my paper. Unfortuantly I can't use copyrighted images without the owner's permission. What would I have of you?
I'd love it if some people allowed me to use their comics as an example of different types and forms of art within the comic world. You'd get credit in the paper and if you're really interested you can read the final thing :P. Just send me a PM if you're willing, and state that you've allowed me permission to use an image. Give me guidelines of what I can and cannot due with it too! (I don't plan on editing anything, just posting the comic and comparing it to “modern definitions of art”
I'm looking for all types of comics! Manga, painted, digi, simple cartoons, ellaborate illustrations, one panels, anything except…not sprite comics (no offence), but I can't use a sprite comic unless the sprites are original and homemade, due to the copyrights in of themselves. It's not a personal thing, but a copyright thing!
If anyone knows of any comics out on Public Domain, that'd be great too!
Anyways, I really appreciate it. Remember, it's for scholarly pursuits, and you'll totally get credit for your work.
Our comics are better than the big dogs anyways.

I NEED THIS WITHIN THE NEXT 5 Hours!

Sub, thank you so much!
You're the man. I was really hoping you'd reply, because your art and typography is a great example of a counterargument to “the overly stylized blah blah of comics”

I'm glad you're using web comics for your paper. Way to represent. :)
It's much safer just to use web comics and get author permission, but just a thought - I don't think it's illegal to use copyrighted images and/or characters from the comic book world under “Fair Use” in copyright law, so long as you do the following:
1) Don't make money from it.
2) Limit use to only illustrate points, not as a main portion of your paper.
3) Include original authorship credit and trademark information (not only who drew the art, but also who owns the rights to the characters used); MLA has an image/print/art format reference for your bibliography.
So, if you wanted to use one or two “mainstream” comic excerpts as examples, I'm pretty sure it's okay. A character illustration from a comic book of a particular hero, for instance, would be perfectly okay.
STRAIGHT FROM THE COPYRIGHT FAIR USE:
“…examples of activities that courts have regarded as fair use: … reproduction by a teacher or student of a small part of a work to illustrate a lesson”
Here is a link so you can read for yourself.

I just wanted to let you know. But I think it's much cooler to use lesser known authors from web comics anyways.
Hope that helps,
~Jerome~

Yeah.
Thank you for the actual references to this! I may use some of mainstream, now that I can back up the Fair Use policy. Recon, this is great information.
Still, I'd like to still get some comics from webcomic authors, because it illustrates a point I'm trying to make about comic art not necessarily being all Batman and Superman, but a means of expression. Just like different forms of painting, writing, etc.
There's a wealth of talent here on the internet, some of which could probably make greater points than I could find within mainstream comics today. (Although old school stuff helps play a role, the writing there was a bit less farfetched. Graphic Novels could be useful too).
Thanks again!

No problem.
You're teacher is being silly. Using a small sample from a comic book is no different under copyright law than quoting “Captain Ahab” in a book report. But I digress…
If I had any web comic art up, I'd certainly let you use it. Subcultured's work is a sweet choice for your report though and I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding others to let you use theirs.
Good luck mate.

Alright times up for this deadline!
Here's what's going to happen. First of all I want to thank:
Reconjsh for the (C) information and sending me some of his thoughts. Definately helped out a ton.
Sub for allowing me to use his artwork and responding so quickly
Tantz for allowing me to use her artwork :D
Generic Human for allowing me to use her artwork
Wing for allowing me to use his artwork!
Ozone for allowing me to interview him (though I never managed to schedule a time)
You all made the process much easier.
So where's it all at? Did I deface your things? Did I slaughter your work and quotes? Nah. I'm finished with the draft, that I will turn in. However, I don't intend to stop this paper here. I'm actually really interested on where it was going and am going to expand on it some. If anyone still wants to be a part of it, just let me know still!
When will you get to see it?
Well the people who helped me out today, get to see it as soon as I edit the draft. So in a week or two.
The others, I'll put a link up eventually with the final product!
Again, I wanna thank everyone, this is a great community.
