Does anyone want to help name one of my characters?
Currently, I'm calling him “Cain” - a name I'm not satisfied with - and since I can't come up with a name I like, I figured I'd ask for help. If someone suggests a name that we use, we will draw you or one of your characters into the story based on whatever picture you provide… of you or a character from your comic. You/they get to be a zombie! ;)
Might be a fun way to promote your comic? I'll be sure to mention the cameo and provide a link to whatever comic you want when the page runs.
Here's some details on “Cain”:
What he looks like: http://www.drunkduck.com/Causing_Static/index.php?p=170864
* Capable and respected leader of a group of 4 protagonists. They aren't traditional “heroes” though; they begin the comic (and perhaps remain?) as willing instruments of evil. The others in the group are called Cutter, Zoya, and Toro.
* It's Earth, 300 or so years from now in the future and predominant cultures are from China, Russia, and India… with some Japanese and Spanish influences. One of our characters, Zoya, has a name that is common for Russian females for instance.
* He has minor magic abilities and is the best total-package fighter of the group. He's sincere and caring, married… and corruptable. Despite having a truely good heart, he covets power but is too cautious to act out any ambitions thereof by himself. He also loves his rarely-seen family too much not to value them over wiser decisions. His family is poor despite his military pay. I'm not saying he gets corrupted, but these are all personality flaws that are important to the character and what happens to him.
* He's confident, direct, extroverted, wounded and scarred from several fights, about 30-35 years old, and lacks hobbies.
* He does have one “hobby”. He's a artist, albeit a bad one. He welds large abstract sculptures during the very little free time provided by the agency he and his teammates work for.
I'm reluctant to give out too many details as they may be spoilers… but feel free to ask questions.
Thanks in advance for helping. I look forward to talking to you guys about this.
~Jerome~
NOTE: The “winner”, of course, will have to give written premission to use their (or their character's) likeness without any monitary compensation. I doubt we'll ever try to sell this, but we gotta cover our butts, right?

What culture name are you looking for?Because a long while back, while working for a name for a character of Indian heritage,I stumbled across the name “Jaskaran”,translating roughly to “Will be remembered by his name”. But if your looking for something from another culture,I'll keep trying.

Captain JimReally, it could be from any culture or country. It could be completely made up too. I'm just looking for something that pops out at me.

I really like the meaning of Jaskaran, but the name itself could roll off the tongue easier… it's a mouth-full.

NOLAN
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Irish, English
Pronounced: NO-lan
From an Irish surname which was derived from Ó Nuallain meaning “descendent of Nuallan”. The name Nuallan means “champion” or “chariot fighter”. The baseball player Nolan Ryan is a famous bearer of this name.

I suggest:
Shiva - due to its Hindu origins. (links to both india and the name is well known in japan)
Means “Always pure”, but remember a name can be ironic, and the parents never know what a child will grow up to be.

Just the other day I wrote in another topic about how I hated cliche names that mean something in another language. =P
So, my first and primo choice would be the name Viktor. Several different spellings, but it all comes down to personal preference. It has a nice formal, military ring to it, and if need be can be sortened to Vik, which itself has a sharp concsenent on the end as a sort of jab or a punch to the name.
Another name would be Vincent. Again it's a nice formal name, but shortened it can be used in a sincere way. The name has several different faces to it.
To round it off, I'll throw out a third name, shall I? Hmm…
Your original suggestion was Cain, and I'm assuming it was to play off the legend of Cain from the bible. I may be wrong, but if that is the case, then how does the name Seth appeal to you? In a way, he was the replacement for the bad son; a cover-up, if you will. A correction to the wrong in life. And that name could inturn plau into whatever background story you choose to throw out there.
But again, it's all your call. Just remember, you have to live with this name for a long time. Choose wisely and good luck!

Yeah, just choose the name you like, whether it means something cool or not. Lets be honest unless you make up a name it will mean something. However don't choose the name on what it means, its maybe useful to know or it maybe a hinderance.
Whatever the choice, good luck with the comic

I fully agree Rydel 6…
Captain Hook is a good example of that. He was “Captain Hook” before Peter chopped his hand off and fed it to the croc. It's just ridiculous that every character that has some sort of distinguishing feature to their person or background has a birth-given name that alludes to that distinguishing feature. Lucky for Captain Hook his parents didn't name him James Castration.
None of my current characters do this:
Cutter - just a “callsign” that I/he liked to hide his real name (which is a good thing in his line of work). He doesn't cut or use a sword or anything like that.
Zoya - just a common russian name I liked… I don't even know what it means.
Toro - a self given nickname for liking and associating himself with the mythology of minotaurs.
I should mention that in these characters world, it's sometimes advantageous - but not necessary - to have a nickname rather than use your real name. In fact, Zoya is the only person that is referred to by their birth name thus far… but “Cain” can be too… either way is fine. “Cain” was actually chosen because ORIGINALY I called him “Darkain” when I was brainstorming names - a name that was randomly formed in my mind when I was randomly connecting syllables. But since I hated “Darkain” because saying it is awkward to me, I shortened it to “Cain” for ease of communication while I brainstorm a new name.
Anyways, Viktor isn't bad. I'm not sold on it… but it does have a sharp edge to it I like.

Very well, here are a few random names and I don't know what they mean.
Jöran, Kaarlo, Greyson, Silas, Rostislav, Mu, Éanna, Xenocrates, Matthew, and Osborne.
I could make more later, but I thought one line was enough considering Silas is in there. Awesome name.

Horatius.
It's the name of a legendary Roman hero who defended Rome from an entire army by himself. If it's too long, you can shorten it to like “Hora” or “Rat” or something…
Here are some nickname ideas I got from his character bio:
Twist
Boss
Chin
Scar
Welder
