I'm not really seeing how this is a community project. Everyone's avatars are already available on the site. What's the point of it?

The reason is for two reasons:
1: Just cuz they're available, doesn't mean every one will see it. This will be a way for others to meet new users.
2: It's not JUST for avatars you are currently using. You can submit ANY avatar, and if you have an avatar general enough, others can use it.
