Books in the News

Now, the good Professor always follows up his “Good News, Everyone” with decidedly bad news. But for this week, that can wait. And I was going to spend the first part of this newspost looking at some of the more depressing stories about books from around the world, but end on a happier note. However, I've decided to skip the depressing stories and just go whole-heartedly into the feel-good one instead.

In the town of Chelsea, Michigan (pop. 5000-ish) about 300 people turned up to help a local bookstore move premises. They formed two human chains and passed the books from the old location to the new one, handling over 9000 books between them.

It turns out that there are a number of feel-good, positivity-based news sites out there on the interwebs. People it seems, sometimes want to filter out the negative and just find something nice about people and the world to read.

I searched a few of these for comic book related stories, and didn't find anything recent. Positive News last had a positive comic book article in 2017. Good News Network had a 2022 article entitled ‘Keanu Reeves Creates Comic Books with New Superhero that Kinda Looks Like Him’, which at least made me smile.

The term ‘webcomic’ yielded no results at all.

Going to comic book specific news sites like Bleeding Cool you are generally overwhelmed with negative articles; although the article on the GI Joe/Transformers crossover book from Free Comic Day seemed upbeat.

So, it seems like we need more good news stories about comics, and maybe some about webcomics? Any suggestions for that?

@MOrgan: Thanks for that. A good news story indeed.

You missed Eric July's comic book crowdfunding success story? https://thesplintering.com/2022/07/19/eric-july-isom-rippaverse-comic-book-campaign-ends-first-week-with-more-than-2-million/ Heck I think even the New York Times had an article on it. (Couldn't find the link, sorry.)

I'm always up for some good news. And some good Kea-nus as well! Love that story about Chelsea Michigan's bookstore. That warms the heart.

Since I can read them for free and at least some are really good, webcomics are good news in principle!
