Photo: “More Than A Psychological Test”. Ink on White Paper, found objects, rubber roller, ink blotter. Created by kawaiidaigakusei. Westwood, Los Angeles, California. (February 2025)
Last Saturday afternoon was spent at an Art Lab in a museum in Los Angeles, California, that was open to participants of all ages.
The set-up was quite simple: Large black ink pads, a rubber roller, a soft ink blotter, pipe cleaners, rubber bands, plastic netting, aluminum foil, cloth, crumpled paper, and toothpicks.
INSTRUCTIONS: 1) Place a texturized object underneath a sheet of white paper. 2) Take a rubber roller covered with black ink and roll it over the object so it makes an imprint on the white paper. 3) Continue layering the paper with various patterns of found objects. 4) Step back and enjoy the creation.
The Art Lab was based on a body of work that was currently on display at the museum over the weekend. The organizers gave the option to enjoy the gallery first OR to go straight into the hands-on art project. It was more convenient due to the interest of time to dive right into the art project because visiting the gallery required a museum sticker that needed to be picked up in the lobby.
The above image is a cropped portion of the final piece of art. Do you see anything interesting?
Try this activity out on your own. All you need is an ink pad and computer paper. It is possible to recreate the art lab at home as the materials are found objects and can be anything.

I really like that. It looks like an album cover for a series of tonal soundscapes on the theme of urban decay (or something).

Reminds me a bit of what I used to do with photograms long, long ago. Haven't got a good example as a scan at the moment, only this: https://www.deviantart.com/pauleberhardt/art/VSOP-The-valiant-adventurer-finds-a-spring-535913333 ;) I did much more abstract and less silly stuff as well, though, only I'd have to dig deep in a box at my other place. Very cool. I'll bet it was fun, too. With this kind of thing, the very act of creating the piece is as much part of the art as the result.
