Days to Remember

Every year our family are gifted a very nice calendar from one of our relatives. However, it often arrives a couple of months into the year. So, I'm usually tasked with whipping up a temporary couple of months to pin to the door to use until it arrives.

This year I decided to include family birthdays, New Zealand holidays, and so on. Then I got even more motivated an added in some of the UN recognised World and International Days. Then I found a page that listed all the non-holiday days, weeks and months celebrated in New Zealand. For example, March 2025 is our National Book Month. Other Countries have book months at completely different times of the year (October for the US) or just don't have one (The UK only recognises World Book Day on March the 6th, while Australia has a Children's Book Week in mid-August.)

Once I'd filled in all those dates there were still a lot of gaps, so I searched around and stumbled onto the weirdness that is the various National Days of the United States. This month of March alone has ‘What if Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day’ (3rd), ‘National Cereal Day’ (7th), ‘National Meatball Day’ (9th), ‘National Corn Dog Day’ (15th), and ‘Alien Abductions Day’ (20th), to just name a few.

Sometimes it feels like the days are grouped together for comedic value. Take today, the 6th of March. It's ‘National Dentist’s Day' in the United States of America, but also ‘National Oreo Cookie Day’ and ‘White Chocolate Cheesecake Day’. Do those three things go together? Is it a plan by the Dentists to drum up more business on way or another? Indulge yourself on some burnt-tasting cookies and some sugary cheesecake, then give a dentist a call when that tooth starts to ache!

'International Woman's Day' (8th) is followed by ‘National Barbie Day’ (9th), which seems to undercut it a little. But the 10th is the ‘International Day of Woman Judges’, and there is a Barbie Judge range which aims to “inspire girls to imagine everything they can become – like protecting the rights of others and ruling on legal cases! She wears an authentic career outfit with black robe and comes with a gavel and block to play out all kinds of stories,” so maybe it all fits together nicely?

'National Popcorn Day' (13th) is also ‘Good Samaritan Day’, so do try and give popcorn to people that love it if you remember. The Ides of March (15th) is also ‘National Corn Dog Day’, so beware of corn dogs if you've recently overthrown a Republic. Oddly, that one feels it might be prescient this year.

French Language Day (20th) is followed by National French Bread Day (21st), for those people who'd rather be a gourmand than a francophile.

I'm personally looking forward to National Cocktail Day (24th), but since I write about cocktails all the time I feel that (almost) every day is Cocktail Day. It's also National Cheesesteak Day, but I feel that one indulgence is enough for me that day.

'International Waffle Day' (25th) is also (somewhat ironically given the alternative meaning for waffle) ‘International Day of Remembrance of Slavery Victims and the Transatlantic Slave Trade’. Unfortunately, National Editor's Day isn't until September the 4th.

The 26th is ‘Make Up Your Own Holiday Day’. What item, animal, idea, or food item would you like to see a celebratory day for? International Webcomics Day perhaps?

Hahaha! That's was a cool read ❤️🙏 I made a Callander with my art last year, I would have loved to have all your days in it 😁

The beauty of this is that even if it was possible to spot a remaining day without any special meaning attached to it, it'd probably become "Bugger-All Day" just to celebrate this very fact. I think, I might just go ahead and do that, if I can. :) Otherwise, I very much support bravo's proposal.

International The Duck webcomics week. This place deserves a week, not just a day.
