Random Quail comics

The ‘Quail’s Random' list of comics on The Duck front page is a holdover from the early days of Drunk Duck. There have been occasional noises made about removing it, but when push comes to shove people have spoken up for the random list. Personally, I like it. It reminds you of the comics the site has hosted, and is often a source of inspiration. It's also kind of comforting to know that your old comics might randomly pop up and be clicked on by someone, perhaps decades into the future.

Every now and then I like to click on some of the Quail's Random comics. Last time I found some gems …

'Hippies', by Kekebell, was 12 pages of (mostly) black and white line drawing about a werewolf and a vampire (edited, thanks Amelius) who were also hippes. Simple and funny, it's a shame there wasn't more to read. It was a clever twist on the monster trope having them as laid-back and almost always stoned, rather than angst-ridden or violent. Kekebell posted three other comics back in the early 2010s, and all of them had interesting concepts behind them.

'99 Percent Human' is another interesting idea. A cat becomes human … almost. Unfortunately the comic is only one page, and that page is presents rotated side-ways for some reason. It was the only page ever uploaded to The Duck by ThatComicNerd, back in 2016.

'They Think I'm Cute and Cuddly', by scri66leKitty was a tribute to their cat. Only 8 pages, but a complete poetic tale. scri66leKitty had five other titles on The Duck, including Khubz, which was about a slice of bread.

'Archie Stuff', by PJBRO, is described as a “collection of the various illustrations i've put together for Archie Comics”. Some of the drawings are top-notch stuff and others are rough sketches. One of the pages had the creators' actual name on it, so I looked him up. Sure enough he did work for Archie Comics, and in particular on some Sonic the Hedgehog issues. He later “branched out into the world of licensed franchise management”; whatever that means. PJBRO also has some other short-lived titles sitting on the Duck, including pencils for a real nice little Star Trek short comic.

Do you ever click on Quail's Random selections? What gems have you found?

@marcorossi: Only 440? Then I'm sorry to say, you haven't looked the way I have. I managed to find a five-digit number I don't bother to remember so it can't scare me. There's WAY more here, and it's not an easy task, because it turned out not to be as clear-cut as it seems. Btw. Yours have been on my list almost from the start, but please check if I did it right.

Done! Check this out: Done! Check this out: https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/forum/topic/179993/?page=1#3024742

PS: if I go in the search section, the most I can find are 440 comics. If this is the case, it should be really easy to find the completed ones. I expected to find more comics though, given how long DD has been around.

marcorossi at 3:08AM, May 23, 2025

As the proud owner of 3 completed webcomics, I strongly agree with the idea of creating a "completed" section. We users could check old comics to see if they are completed if we had a cronological list (I assume that it is some thousand comics, but well if there are at least ten people doing this it wouldn't be impossible).

Cool

@Teh Andeh "some of my older comics have popped up there for me before"//Which ones do you recommend?

PaulEberhardt at 9:54PM, May 22, 2025

@Gunwallace and Amelius: Now that you mention it, I might as well let the cat out of the bag. This is exactly why I actually started compiling a completed comics list half a year ago, which I've been working on on and off. I was going to share it soon in any case, just hadn't got around to doing so, because I wasn't sure about the format. So why not now? At the moment it's just a spreadsheet on Google sheets, and in the long run I thought we might make a fandom Wiki out of it or something - implementing such a thing in the site costs money, so a kind of workaround like this would remove a bit of the modernisation pressure for a while. Got to go to work now, but you might want to look into the forum tonight (CET). I'd like to tell you what I've done and why we're still going to have to agree on a concept there.

Weirdly enough some of my older comics have popped up there for me before haha

Gunwallace at 2:57PM, May 22, 2025

@Amelius: A Completed Comics list is a really interesting idea. Not sure how that would be coded, however? I do hate how completed comics just sort of disappear from sight, since they are no longer updated. It means unless you already know about them, or they pop up in Quail's Random, they are essentially dead, which is a huge waste. Perhaps a list generated with comics over a certain number of pages would be easier to implement?

Amelius at 2:37PM, May 22, 2025

Indeed Paul, for those very reasons I would not advocate for complete removal, but I think this is something that deserves a place off the main page, where we once had other great community features at one point like the oekaki and community contests. I would actually like to see Quail's Random made an entire feature for those who enjoy it.

PaulEberhardt at 12:56PM, May 22, 2025

I'll second some of what Amelius says here. We really might want to mind new readers a bit more, but otherwise I love Quail's Random just for its, well, randomness. Of course it digs up a lot of ancient half-arsed abandoned attempts of just a few pages, ideally drawn in MS Paint or with ketchup on a used napkin or something and then badly photographed, that's in its nature, but it's also its charm. Our Mr Quail is brutally honest in his way. However, I actually did find quite a number of completed comics with that thing as well, really good ones at that, so it's not as useless as it admittedly sometimes seems. Not to mention the hidden gems, of course.

Amelius at 12:19PM, May 22, 2025

As one of those noisome botherers about the QR, my problem is DD does not generate thumbnails for them, which makes the site look abandoned. DD may not be as cutthroat as sites who monetize popularity, but it IS a struggle to get noticed here, and QR's not helping. It's a fun concept if you have more than 3 categories on the main page-- but we could have a category for NEW comics and a list for completed works, not just comics that updated today and comics that don't even update anymore. I *like* QR-- but that doesn't change the facts about it not being a net positive for the site when you consider what READERS look for when they come to read webcomics, it's a novelty for us, it's an annoyance for people looking for new things to add to their library.

Amelius at 11:05AM, May 22, 2025

(Pssst, Sundancer is actually a vampire, only Moonwatcher is a werewolf! I loved Hippies! XD)

J_Scarbrough at 8:17AM, May 22, 2025

I've discovered some comics on here via Quail's Random, but the thing that does kind of annoy me is that almost all of the comics I've discovered via Quail's Random have clearly been discontinued or abandoned ages ago, which is a shame, because there surely have been some gems I've found that would have been nice to see continue.

Never seen any of these - love hearing about uncovered treasures from the Quail's Random Caverns.

Thanks Gunwallace. I never knew Archie had a mustang.
