SS2 73 Mum's not happy!
skyangel on July 4, 2008
Hi all,
Em worked out last week how to get DD to upload changes to the pages!! So at last I will be able to go back and correct all the typos and inconsistencies that have been making me squirm for so long! While I'm raving about Em's abilities I must mention her new story out this week. I know she has been musing over it for some time, and I've just checked out the pages myself and it looks really interesting! It seems like it's going to be a dark, creepy tale with a little romance thrown in as well, and the heroine has one very sinister looking doll !!! . You can see it for yourself at PUPPETS AND STRINGS Also if you're into dollies, it's probably worth reminding you of Emeraldas's lovely strip as well called PIERROT which is pretty damn cutesy, and I love it for both it's cute art and sweet story!!
Just one last mention: DD is a great place to make friends and chat, learn about each others cultures and lifestyles right across the world, but we all have to remember that not all people have good intentions especially towards young pretty people(I think I just scrape in there!), and I've had one cause this week to be very worried about one of my readers.
Admin have posted a good warning in the editorial which is worth reading, but to quote one line from it which I think makes real good sense: ‘If you have friends online that you would rather keep secret from in-person friends and family, why is that? Are you really convinced they are safe for you?’
Have a great weekend, Sky :)

Did her mum not hear that part about Janey's mum possibly kicking her out? Or does she think Sarah is just being dramatic or trying to have her girlfriend move in? The ones making a living off their comics, they are doing it by selling products featuring their creations, like t-shirts and mousepads and keyrings and 'adult massagers'

My mother's like this, and it really upsets me because I am 16 but she still thinks I'm too young for an "adult" relationship even though I am 16 and my boyfriend and I have been together for 14 months. Unfortunately I'm the youngest of my mother's children, which is the only reason why. I know she's only being over-protective, but it's suffocating. Sorry for the rant, I just mean that I can relate to practically this whole page, it's that realistic.

Great page!
Cuddly at 10:17AM, July 8, 2008
Still loving it And yes, Mom has many valid concerns, and the great thing is, it doesn't matter if it's a guy or a gal that she's with, she'd say the same thing.

Poor Janey and Sarah! >_< I hate mums like that, but she has valid concerns. Awesome storyline though! http://www.drunkduck.com/MDWG

NSFW: Only your 1st vote counts. It is true it seems your other votes went through even though it tells you you can't cast for so long but the counters don't go up for anything but the 1st vote... or so was my observation when I tried re-voting. Josh doesn't make a living off Girly. He makes a living off his adult comics and Slipshine. That said, I had to LOL at seeing Josh's Girly mentioned here as it and SS are the only comics I make a consious effort to vote for everyday. To a great deal I probably would not read SS (since I would have never found YU+ME, so no Lesbian Pirates...) or probably any webcomic at all if it wasn't for Girly and Josh. And for no other reason than to have all my favorite 5 webcomics in 1 post I'll mention Schlock Mercenary ;;>_>

Sarah is ambidextrous! In 61 she left-mouses. She is leftie in some of chapter 1 too. However, she cooks rightie in the recent frame. Janey is consistently a rightie. Stacey kicks with her right boot. I am lefty - probably the best-protected minority there is - and I love to see lefty heroines.

At the same time, Lesnick had to quit girly for a long time because even though it was a top ten, he didnt make enough money off of it. If you wanna talk about people who make money off of comics, look at Jeph Jaques of Questionable Content, Fred of Megatokyo, or Danille Costello of Girls with Slingshots. Those, other than Gisele Legace, are the only ones i know of that make a significant amount on their art. And even then they ask for donations. Regardless, an artists worth is not based upon how much he or she makes off of their art because thats not what art is about. Art is about expression-if you happen to be a lucky person who's expression is popular, you make money. If not, you get to be unique. As always, beautiful page. I dont blame saras mom at all.

Okay I can understand her mothers concern but she could atleast be nicer about it jeezus

My Irish keyboard can't do the accent on Gisele, but it can do the accent on Lagacé. Together with Xaime Hernandez and our very own Sarah Skye, she is the strongest influence on my drawing and inking, the first few examples of which I will be sending to S_S as fanart. These are to me, like, gods. Sarah probably won't even put my efforts up.
avisfortuna at 7:38PM, July 5, 2008
That's MAKE comicking, because I can grammar well, yes I can.
avisfortuna at 7:37PM, July 5, 2008
Hey, say what you want about the voting system on TWC, but don't knock Girly. Lesnick is a good artist and he's come a long way. He's also been doing this for years and years, and none of his earlier works were as popular as Girly. The sad truth is, most webcomic artists like myself and skyangel will probably never enjoy widespread success. The web is simply over-saturated with the medium. You can't really do anything except advertise more. Besides, I can't speak for her, but I do this as a hobby. It is REALLY hard to support yourself making comics, and you have to do it nearly every day to make any money off of it -- just ask Gisèle Legace over at Penny and Aggie, CCS, and Ménage àTrois. tl;dr, Girly is good, it's incredibly hard to get into the top ten, comics in the top ten don't necessarily making comicking their only/full-time job. This ended up longer than I wanted it to. :(
NSFW at 7:19PM, July 5, 2008
Girly starts the month with 1300 TWC votes, and I don't think its 1300 times better than S_S. This wouldn't matter if no-one paid attention to TWC and Buzz votes, but they do. Comics in the top ten can give up their day jobs. If Skyangel gave up her day job, she could give us daily updates. I vote several times a day, but obviously not enough. Your ideas?
Janara at 3:07PM, July 5, 2008
Can't blame Sarah's mom really.
LilyRose at 1:32PM, July 5, 2008
parents will continue to give out the very same advice they contemptuously scoffed at and assiduously ignored when they themselves were 16. If I had a kid who was like me when I was that age, I'd have them jailed.
Molly Loves the KLF at 12:23PM, July 5, 2008
Lovely page as always! I hate to say it, but Sarah's mum's right! GCSEs might be tiny exams, but you need them to get into a good college! Oh well! And thanks for the warning, I'll make sure to act cautiously! xxx
simplyme at 11:26AM, July 5, 2008
Well I think that as the internet becomes more common and kids start using it earlier and earlier warnings against internet predators becomes as commonplace as warnings against drinking and driving. Every kid knows not to give out personal info because of predators just like every teen knows not to drink and drive. Unfortunately, the countless warnings don't prevent all children from doing stupid things.
reidavidson at 10:33AM, July 5, 2008
Oh and as for the internet thing? I personally hold the belief that no one under age 16 should be ALLOWED in any kind of chat or forum. Internet use should be with a parent only or for a limited time, within an hour. After they turn sixteen, I think that a parent should have a list of screen names and passwords to any account they make on any site. So if something is happening that worries them, they can check on their activity. I'm not even all that anti-internet. I chat online. I have online friends. I met my fiance online. But teenagers are a little dumb sometimes. o.o;; I should know, I've been online and chatting since I was 13, and it was a miracle I was not solicited.
reidavidson at 10:25AM, July 5, 2008
My mum had a hard time adjusting too. It was like, she still loved me and accepted it as best she could, but she said she didn't think I was old enough to know something like that or that I was too vocal about it. I'm sure Sarah's mom just needs more time.
BloodFusion at 9:02AM, July 5, 2008
stupid mouse i meant to give it a 5....
