King101, do not harass other users in my comic's comment section when they're trying to have a mature discussion with you. Keep it up and I'll be reporting you to the admin staff.
All the things you just named are things your comics all lack. That makes no sense for you to be spouting this and yet not practicing what you're preaching.
FYI I'm reporting any comments along the lines of "Where's YOUR comic?" because it's a low brow last ditch argument and an excuse to not take constructive criticism.
Pfff, hahah. If I didn't know how to scratch sprite, why would I have mentioned it? You have to know how to do something before you decide to use it in an argument, otherwise it makes your point invalid. Therefore, YES, I can scratch sprite.
But making a sprite comic? Why would I waste my time? I'll I'd need to do to make a "good" sprite comic in your eyes (And the other pokemon sprite comic creator's eyes) would be to go to a game rip forum, copy the in game sprites, edit the colors, find some more rips of game backgrounds, and paste my recolored sprites in and add word bubbles.
OH, WAIT I KNOW WHAT I FORGOT. Shittons of PHOTOSHOP FILTERS and CURVE TOOL EXPRESSIONS. MY BAD.
While I agree that spriting is most definitely a form of art, what YOU do is NOT.
RECOLORING IS NOT ART.
All you do is steal sprites from game rips and act like you have skill because you're editing them. Learn to scratch sprite, then you'll have some clout when arguing with me.
Copying and pasting your sprite comics does not take effort.
Yeah but you still got to make it look good. You gotta place the sprites right, find the background etc. So i have to say your SO wrong. Besides spriting is just another form of art and thats JUST how you make it. If you don't like sprites comics fine but DON'T say it doesn't take effort!!!!!!!!
You don't put effort in your comics, Charliemew2. You copy and paste a bunch of sprites you've recolored to a ripped in-game background and add in word bubbles. I'm sorry you can't handle the truth. < :(
Alright. Skipping the trolls, flames, and WTF moments on the comments and shaking in utter disbelief that there are more Yahwehs (I'm gonna be nice and Ask Yahweh how did your Winter Break and New Year Go?), I need to put my foot down here.
So basically with this page, I feel that you are basically telling us (No Offense) to not even bother making a comic in the first place. Ignoring Xepher's comment about 'I don't care if it took 4 hours to do sprites' I've been doing this for almost 3 years now, and I've done it my own way, And I was fine doing it my own way before suddenly people like you (I've decided you aren't a troll and maybe you are trying to help us, but seriously, I think you could be a little less of an asshole about it, no offense).
Panel angels are something I've been improving on for the past three weeks. And if you say we don't put effort in, that's a load of FUCKING BULLSHIT. You're camera angle is something I've seen in plenty of comics and I actually happen to dislike it when it's used by the wrong person. I do put a lot of effort into my comic. Maybe it's the best I've got. I'm going to risk sounding like an asshole when I say that the growlithe panel is a terrible one that is a good example on bad motion, but some are good. You ever read Pokemon X? It's a comic that relies on the jokes more so then style or quality, and even though he's a year behind, Recon Dye has done that for 8 years. 8 fucking years.
So basically to wrap up my rant, I think basically, you're telling us absolutely everything is halassed and we shouldn't even bother in the first place. So You know what? I seriously think this whole concept NOW is idiotic, and I apologize for taking up your time with my opinions, that others will skim through and think of me as a whiny little bitch. Well you know what? I just had to let out that whiny little bitch, and now I feel more motivated to improve my comic and prove you wrong about everything you've said about me.
So yeah Yahweh, I'm so mixed about you right now it's not even funny. You're like that stupid Math Teacher you can't stand, but teaches you unbelievable stuff to help you (Not to sound like an asshole myself). So when I get my new style up, if it has abuse of photoshop effects (Mentioned a few pages ago) It's won't. I use PDN :P. In my opinion, sometimes flat angles are necessary, abuse of photoshop etc. is good, characters can be as fucking contrived as people want.
So what I'm saying is, some people who don't appreciate your advice take it the wrong way. And that's fine. I for one, just don't care anymore. I do thank you though for showing up here Yahweh, because you had helped set off the chaon of events that has in my opinion made me a better spriter.
Goodbye.
Charliemew2
(Wow I hate ranting. *Goes off to make Comic*
LOL OH LOOK MORE YAHWEH ACCOUNTS FROM BUTTHURT FAGGOTS.
FUCKING HILARIOUS.
No really though, it's actually becoming extremely sad at the same time. I mean... holy shit, I can't beleive I am witnessing butthurt faggots that are bigger pansies than your typical 13-year-old myspace emo kid. Seriously:
"WAAAAAAAH SOMEONE DOESN'T LIKE MY HALFASS POKEMON COMICS AND HE'S WRITING TUTORIALS ON HOW TO IMPROVE, I GUESS ILL JUST MAKE A HATE ACCOUNT AND SHOW YAHWEH WHO'S BOSS EVEN THOUGH I'M ONLY MAKING MYSELF A FUCKING MORON IN THE END HURRR"
Oh and what the hell is up with yahweh3haha's stupid avatar? The eyes and the mouth are so retarded looking and what is up with the grammar too? "I HATE YOU IF YOU ARE HUMAN AND TRY"
Try? Try what?
To the butthurt Pokemon "spriters*"
(*see recolorists) :
To be quite honest even if Yahweh half-assed his "action" scene, it's still much better than what you guys shit out.
Pokemon sprites were never meant to be used in a comic, period. Anyone who says that the sprites were "made" for their comic is A.)lying and B.) fucking stupid. Just because you swap colors on a sprite or add a couple pixels to the hair does not make your sprite "original" nor does it distinguish it from the FIFTY MILLION other PISS POOR sprites that are used in comics.
Your characters are not original. In ALMOST ALL Pokemon comics here, the main character is an author self insert because, oh wow, hardly any of you know how to make original characters that have real depth, so the easy way out is to base characters in part or in whole on yourself. Of the few sprite comics that DO have original characters, this is usually overshadowed by poor plot or shoddy use of grammar.
However back to the matter at hand: The only Pokemon sprites that convey movement are limited in their application, and typically the movement that the games provides is squashed and stretched or moving the arms / legs / tail / opening and closing eyes. Meaning that using in-game battle sprites is the closest you can get to being true to the games and having the most movement, however given the style of the comic it will be the worst graphically. Therefore, the common fix is using the Pokemon Ranger overworld sprites and / or the overworld sprites from HeartGold / SoulSilver to keep with the style used throughout the comic.
However the main caveat is that the Pokemon Ranger overworld sprites and the HeartGold and SoulSilver sprites convey limited movement. But because they use a variety of positions they tend to be used in sprite comics because of the ease of ripping, copying and pasting. I mean seriously, I just googled "Pokemon Overworld Sprites" and what do I come up with? This: http://img16.imageshack.us/f/nintendodsppokemonhgssp.png/ Wow! I can make my own Pokemon comic and copy and paste in a battle scene!
However, moving along, I must reiterate that Pokemon sprites were never meant to be used in a comic. Meaning that no matter how much you resize, stretch, add motion blurs or throw in "action" like effects such as smudge-tooled flames, your comic will inevitably look like shit.
TL;DR : There is no such thing as a "good" Pokemon *SPRITE* comic. The only exception would be a scratch sprite comic. (For those who don't know what that is, a "scratch sprite" a custom sprite you make *yourself* )
Why is this so? There is no true effort put into Pokemon sprite comics; there is recoloring, copying, pasting and throwing some curve tools and Photoshop effects around. That is not effort. Nobody in the art world cares if it took you four hours to edit the sprites; you didn't make them, and you aren't showing true skill.
Quit your whining, learn to draw or sprite, and become real artists instead of sucking off the dead, infected teat of the sprite comic community. Just because you can recolor does not make you an artist.
@Brawllucas stop blaming me for everything I'm sick of it! God dang!! Just cause you got some sick grudge on me doesnt mean you can blame me for everything!!
@yahweh2
And thanks for proving that you're an ignorant little shit like Princess Eevee was in the previous page.
"Well how about you try making a different camera angle for the pokemon comics like that and show us how its done."
Have you looked at the example or are you blind? Dipshit.
Camera angles are a huge deal in comics, and in film, or any other type of visual medium. Taking the picture of those soldiers, for example, the camera is at an angle lower than the soldiers, this signifying power and bravery in the soldiers. Alternatively, a camera angle higher than the metaphorical "actors" makes things seem more peaceful, unless it is like the aerial shot similar to the one shown in the Die Hard pics.
Also, nice job on the little pokemon example thing. It's not perfect, but it's pretty spectacular.
