Semele

Came across the strange story of the birth of Bacchus (Dionysus) in Spenser's “The Fairie Queene”: his mother, Semele, died after being tricked into getting the father, Zeus, to show her his true, lightning-deadly form, so Zeus took the unborn Bacchus and carried him to term inside his thigh.
What a dad.
