@Gunwallace: (serves 3 or 4, measures are approximate, because I never really weigh the ingredients) 1 1/2 lbs. of green beans, 1-2 small, hard pears (i.e. just before they're completely ripe) per person, 1 lb. waxy potatoes, 0.8 lbs. smoked pork belly or bacon, salt, pepper, parsley (optionally a bit of savory); cut bacon into strips & boil them in a bit of water, then add beans pears & spices (remove stalks but don't cut or peel them) and boil for about 3/4 of an hour (cooking times are a matter of gut feeling, too). Boil potatoes separately. Take everything out of the water and cut pears into halves before serving.

:D Guess I'm going to have to have Pears, Beans & Bacon any time soon now (it's a traditional dish in my parts, and one of my all-time favourites, too - but you need the right kind of beans and pears).

I feel the same way for ham with pineapple.
