Character Profile: Hornet
spacehamster on June 18, 2008
As promised, here's Hornet. I'm hoping I can keep doing these weekly at least until the next issue starts, but we'll see. Speaking of which, check the blog for the plans/schedule on that.
The computer coloring adds enough gloss to hide it, but the illustration here is the first time I've tried inking with a quill. It's a bit shaky still, but I'm going to keep practicing until I get crackin' on issue 5, I like the fluidity of the quill - the tech pen hatches I have now always struck me as a bit stiff.

@ttyler, I stopped coloring the sequentials because it's just way, way too time consuming. It was never an artistic choice, and given the tone of the comic, I still think it should be in color. I may have some news about that tomorrow, by the way.

Man I do love color on your work. Just makes a good thing even better. Is it very time consuming to do? would you consider doing bulletproof in color? I think I know the answer, but I'll throw it out there anyway.

@Jimeth, just to be clear here, I'm sorry if I seemed defensive, your comments have ALWAYS been constructive and helpful and I really, really appreciate you taking the time think about this stuff and share your opinion. I thought some more about what you said, and I think maybe I need to focus a bit more on the characters' limitations and how they compliment each other as a team. I really never thought about that much (at least in terms of their superpowers, I was more interested in the clashing personalities), and I guess with a team story like the last one, it had to become evident. And I really need to get more into the "levels" system of Omega Humans that's only been alluded to so far. Again, thanks for your input. Please keep it coming - I wouldn't have figured out the above if you hadn't made me think about it! @Trevor/Sloo/Midge - thanks, guys!

Hey, I wasn't saying I didn't like the comic; I love it! I just tend to say the good things and the bad things to people who I think deserve more than a "cool!" or "5" and I think you fall into that category. I know they don't all have all the powers, but they do tend to have a lot, is what I'm saying. Take Hornet for example. "We need rescue that person from the top floor of that collapsing building! We need someone to sheild them from the falling debris! We need someone to blast away that wall so that we can escape! Wait! Teams are costly! Just send Hornet!!!" The most likeable people tend to be the ones with just one power, like Shockwire and Shyft. I guess what you're doing is creating a few super mega powerful ones, but they tend to be corperate nasties. Got ya.

not too bad at all with you inking. his powers sound cool too.

@Jimeth, um, well, actually Shadow ended up getting seriously hurt in the fight at the beginning of last issue because she's not invulnerable, and Firewing came away from the fight with Widowmaker with blood dripping from his face because he isn't either... @Dr Love, I used to think about it, but I've gotten a bit too territorial with Bulletproof, I think. I'd be only too happy to collaborate with others on just about any other project, but Bulletproof is my stomping ground.

I love your black and white artwork - it has a kind of 'Love and Rockets' feel to it. So don't get me wrong when I say that the only "downside" to these profiles is that it reminds me how good your artwork looks in color. Did you ever consider partnering with a colorist?
Jimeth at 6:06AM, June 19, 2008
I always thought of Hornet as a bit of a minor, less powerful character. Certainly didn't know he was invulnerable 0_o You tend to give your characters a ton of powers so that they're generally okay in most situations, rather than the other superhero comic style of forcing the characters to work together because they each have only one major strength. I'm not saying it's a flaw in the comic, and it gives it a very different feel, which is good, but it definately misses that 'everyone's unique' aspect that's really cool in other superpower comics.
