He Made Her Laugh Anyway

There's gonna be a bit of Dee and Madeline for a while. I was going for a more “atmospheric” feel on this page if that makes any sense.

@usedbooks: In a way this has already ended badly for Madeline, from what we already know Dee was killed. I guess we don't quite know the nature of the two's relationship. I sort of like the idea of Madeline snapping and going evil.
@oldguy: Two months can seem like a long time–when you meet someone that's very forthcoming with you it can feel like you've known ‘em for years when you’ve only known ‘em for a few weeks. Either that or I’m a total sap– both possibilities seem equally likely.
@Peipei: Possibly, at the very least there's some initial attraction.
@that kid yellow, Zephyrion, khard12: Thanks dudes!
@Trevor: Well, best of luck with your self publishing projects. Having taken on self-publishing before it can be pretty daunting. I've never done professional offset printing though, which it sounds like you're doing. As a quick distribution suggestion, living in Chicago you should see if you can consign your book at Quimby's.
@amanda: Not much time indeed, bummer. It's a pity that they're not aware of how little time they get together. (Did you notice the Cat Face in the background?)
@Jonko: Yeah, moments like this don't really happen at work too much. Most people at all the jobs I've had were grumpy and not to happy being there– not the best environment to befriend people. I've been luckier than most because made quick cartoons that made people laugh.
@JNP: Yeah, it's a flashback but it is the start of kind of a long one. Thankfully as far as I can tell all my commenters seem to get that. So Dee's looks like a chick then? (he is a dude, I assure you.) I guess he's about as crusty as you can get and still be called a “bishie.”

I've been loving these last couple flashback pages. It's fleshing out Madeline so well. To be honest, I never really understood her; I knew she was angry, but I don't think that I could grasp the significance of that anger until now. When you feel like you've got nothing, finding something is the best thing in the world, and to lose it? It'll send you lower than you ever thought you could go. Also, it's interesting to see Dee, considering we never really got to know him before he was gunned down. And this page in particular has a wealth of background life. It really feels alive, like many of your city scenes do. You can feel the desperation--Madeline's desperation--all in the background, from the cops ever present, to the starving dog, and the trash and general squalor.

Aaah, I had totally missed it! *dies of embarrassment* Must pay more attention. Poor emaciated puppy. And I totally wish there were a clocktower in my town that had a nice view. There are a couple, yes, but they aren't really interesting. The one on the river scared the holy living crap out of me last weekend though since I didn't think it actually worked. XD

Never seen a tree? Maybe she does need to get out of St Loraine.

Aw, they're such a cute couple. They off-set each other.

Cool back story.

Hmmmm, not familiar with Quimby's. Gonna have to look it up. As for putting the book on shelves, it doesn't have an ISBN so this book probably won't get that wide of distribution. It's more of an experiment for me to get more comfortable with the publishing process.

Awwww they're so cute :3. Omg I love Dee's design in this page :D. It's just a shame what happens to him eventually x.x.

Aw. So cute and tragic. In life's continuum, it's hard to say when things "end" badly just because your life is crap. As long as you still have a pulse, you might simply be starting another act, and therefore it hasn't ended at all. The tragedy or comedy of life simply depends on where you stop telling your story. For example, if Madeline's story had ended at this point in the flashback, it would have been a not-so-tragic moment. Yeah life sucks but she's with someone she cares about. -- Technically, all lives end in death, so everyone lives a tragedy. Btw, Madeline increasingly reminds me of one of my more tragic minor characters named Kylie, just struggling to survive while *attempting* to be a good person. They almost have the same hairstyle. XD (She'll be a more key player later.)
