Actually that is a decent selection process, not the "if they like Star Trek" but the fact that they would talk about it during the interview, ice breaker, common ground, to get them to trust and ally themselves with you, you must be willing to trust them, and have a non-business conversation with them.

If you can show them that you're just another person, it's a good start to being frends with them. Especially when they think you're some kind of monster.
