Oh, I thought she was smacking her forehead because he was being an idiot. Thanks for the clarification. No, fatality was the magic groupie, she wears dark clothes, only Pe'arl would wear something that bright on the deck of a pirate ship(it would make her a big target)

Well, the best weapons he's had access to for most of his life use explosives in some way. And, given the fact that he doesn't like magic, with the fact that he isn't supposed to abuse magic (with the focus being more along the lines of "do things with it that other's can't"), on orders by the Spirits of Magic themselves, well, let's say that his use of explosives are perfectly fine and explainable.
