Chapter 1: The Journey 4

Oh snap, someone just lost their hand. Many people have commented to me about how violent the opening to this series is, and the truth of the matter is this: it's not very violent at all.
I intentionally put some violence in the beginning to let people know how this story was going to play out. That is wasn't necessarily going to be “fun” action, but that when something happens to a character (like, I dunno - they lose a hand) you as a reader is going to feel it.
I'm usually of the mentality that violence should never be entertaining (if it's not fun to get punched in the face, then why should it be fun to watch someone else get punched in the face), but I don't see a problem with fun action. To me, action and violence are separate. You can have action with violence - but the reverse is not always true.
Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Moondog: Thanks, glad you're digging the beginning. It's a rather epic story, with lots going on. I recommend people take notes. ;)

User: CoyoteLongshot: Thanks dude, and yes - violence and flying body parts make for an interesting opening.

There are just extremities flying every which way. Nice perspective on the sword, BTW.

Yeah, I wanted to set a tone with this page - as in, this is the least amount of violence that you're probably going to see. It only gets more bloody from here - after pages of exposition and plot, of course. :P

just as fitz said...violence within context is understandable...but just random violence in a comic or story seems just plain useless...I wonder though with the stroy you are telling which is just starting...maybe the build up to be pushed by these hoods may have made your point for violence necessary...right not it seems to abrupt as a response. just a couple thoughts...the art is really evolving.

It all depends on the context. Here it's fighting fire with fire, so I'm treating it not so much as entertainment but plain justice. They started it - so they deserved it. But of course a flying severed hand is some sort of eye candy ;)

Cute touch with the flying hand.
