The swordsman definitely has some skeletons in his closet. A tormented past that will be revealed over the course of the story. There's a good reason why he is the way he is, and why he acts the way he does.
This story was very much inspired by the movies of Akira Kurosawa, so you're not far off with the Yojimbo reference!
A jerk? Not really. Or at least that's what I think. A character in the book I'm working on right now (actually just touching it up), is pretty much the same. Well, maybe he doesn't have a sword, but he's not exactly the most sociable guy. On some level, I like the swordsman.
