Belief, Myth and Story

“Get Back”, the new documentary about the Beatles has been released - I haven't seen the whole thing yet, and I'm a fairly casual fan of the Beatles, but I've seen the shorter version of these recording sessions that was released way back when. And I've seen a good chunk of the never-before released new stuff.

One of the many interesting things about this new, 8-hour version is that it takes apart several decades-long beliefs about the Beatles - who have been deeply entrenched cultural icons for as long as most of us have been alive.

The long-held beliefs about the relationship/rift between the members, and the presence and response to Yoko Ono, the tension and argument that was the driving force of this story for everyone for so many years – this extended looks at the bigger context of these days shows a completely different picture.

(By the way, this is not a slam on the original film or filmmaker - at the time he had to squeeze something like a hundred hours of footage into a standalone movie length).

That's the job of a documentary really, no matter what the length - to take the big messiness of real life and bang it into some kind of story.

But it's yet another reminder for me that what we believe, and accept as absolute fact, is sometimes an incomplete picture or even completely wrong. This is a huge subject and I could write a dozen Newsposts about it.

There's so much fighting over “facts” these days. I think keeping a clear head is always a good idea (duh), and not getting too attached to our own preconceptions is something we can all remind ourselves about once in awhile.

We might not have the whole picture, after all!

that's right! my day is coming again! Believe in me!

No! This isn't about you, 'Squatch! Stop it! Get outta here! Get back to where you once belonged!

Have a good one,

The shocking revelation: John, Paul, George and Ringo were human beings who made awesome music if only people would let them be! (Sorry for the spoiler, if I came close enough.) The real value of mythology is not in its factualness but in the entertainment and life lessons projected into it by the storytellers. It's a good thing on a human level to set the record straight and definitely the respectful thing to do for everyone involved, but I doubt it will dispel any of the myths that have been around for so long. The Beatles as an object of reverence and the Beatles as persons have probably long been two different things. I'm more in the Stones faction, personally, but it's the same there, isn't it?

That bottom pic isn't the squatch! It's another great selfie of Banes casually walking the woods getting breakfast

Yoko was the target for most of the breakup abuse back then. The Meghan Markle of her times it seems, but without her we wouldn't have the outstanding Don't Worry Kyoko (Mummy's only looking for a hand in the snow).

Mythology is persistent but facts are stubborn.

I've followed the Beatles since the Ed Sullivan show. This new Beatles film is the holy grail for us Beatle fans.

True words, and words to the wise! There are so many perspectives to look at any situation, but in a documentary or something like that, the perspective is curated by the filmmaker in that case. Rashomon is a great example of this, for people to keep in mind.
