SS6 41 Gnawing doubts!

This stuff about the plaque is quite true btw, when my brother died some 7 years ago now my parents struggled to find the funeral costs and decided to pay for a small plaque later on, but when they asked a few months later they were told it was too late as they should have done it at the time! I'm not sure if things have changed or not now but I have discovered the fee paid for one is renewable every 5 years anyway and it's not cheap!
I imagine Sarah could do a search through a site that holds the sort of information she needs but often they charge too and she would still have the problem of finding the right person out of many with the same name so I felt it best to let her try the easiest option first.

sooooo….for now it's back to Nikki's to get that number and make the call. Find out how she gets on next week. ;)

Not sure what the cost of a plaque costs over here (refuse to go), but in England dad's brother is a former Abbot so it wouldn't have been a huge expense (if at all) to add dad and older brother to the Abbey grounds

Talked to mum, and apparently we have an entire corner in a memorial area of the local cemetery, so it will dad, older brother (already in 'residence') and me and mum (eventually), cremated so doesn't take up much space, but mum only had to pay once and the corner is ours ... seems 'odd' to me to only 'rent' a memorial plaque for five years at a time

Wow you have an eagle's eye Fred! :D Sky's gonna have to fix that page as LUCIFR does show up previously. See page 95 Ch5. I only know what's ahead by a couple pages... Sky keeps me in suspense too :D

FC: Thankyou. I used that plate on Lucy's car way back when they first met so I had to keep it for the rest of it's appearances. I love the 60's style beetles and minis as I think they still out charm their modern versions. I owned a mini but I always wanted a beetle too!

Dear Sky, Great page! Great details! Love the roses, the chapel seen through the gate of the Garden of Remembrance, the aircraft. Its looking so much like Laura is alive, that I will say "Laura is Alive!" What happens if Sarah gets a voice on the phone line saying "Yes I am Laura." It means Lucy's parents are guilty of the hoax and Laura went along with it. Agree the funeral / cemetery racket is grossly expensive. Agree about Faceache also tried to find someone only to find twentyfive plus people with same name. tommym

Tommym: I won't comment on your remarks about Laura as the next few pages will clear that up anyway. As for funerals, my step dad was buried a month ago and the costs is quite fresh in my mind. One thing that I think annoys many people is that regardless of whether you can afford it or not, you still feel like you are being ripped off especially when it comes to looking at the breakdown of costs. Even the simplest can cost close to £3000 here now and the only time you can get a fixed price to compare with others is when you apply up front for a pre-paid funeral plan.

The tension and mystery keeps building!! Love the details!! I imagine if a death is faked, cremation would be the go-to body deal... As for me, I plan to be cremated and my ashes spread in my favorite river (haven't decided which is my favorite yet ;)). 1) I just don't see the need in trying to keep a corpse (even mine) preserved, and 2) not gonna saddle my relatives with the huge cost!

Amongst the international surfing community, it's fairly common for friends to paddle-out at the deceased's "local spot" and scatter their ashes there. Unfortunately, an old friend in Wales has just done this for his son, this past weekend, who died on a trip to Sri Lanka .

Kim: I agree. Ever since I read Poe's story 'The premature burial' in my teens I decided I'd rather be cremated! You just confirmed too about the scattering of ashes which I was a little unsure about. And cost is a very big thing here in the UK at the moment as I've read articles saying many people can just barely afford to pay their own bills etc without having to find huge amounts for funerals, which leaps up every year, so I can see why people cut back where they can.

Its all suuuper sketchy, I mean Is this a normal thing to do? Scatter ashes on the grass in a churchyard? At least not here in Norway.

Udyr: No, actually they dig a square of turf out and scatter the ashes in the hole before putting the turf back again. It is possible to have them scattered freely in woodland or at sea I believe but I'm not sure if you need special permission.
