It is believed that ancient hunter/gatherer societies would hunt using this method. The beast would never die on the first shot, in fact, they didn't need to actually hit the beast, at least not at first. The human body can walk and track with minimal effort, cooling itself via sweating. Other creatures can, at best, pant, which does not cool the body down NEARLY as well as sweating does. As a result, the hunter can track and walk-down the beast which runs away. The beast uses a lot of energy and gets very hot running, while the human pursuing it does not but manages to find it anyway. Imagine "The Terminator" in an ancient setting, it doesn't stop, can't be talked down, and it will kill you when it catches you.

mhalpern: Wolves can't sweat any better than other animals. Sure they use similar tactics but in colder climates where it's not an issue. Or at night. Humans were doing it under African sun, walking or jogging after animal until it basically cooked itself from inside.

The stalking enemy in Doctor Who episode "Heaven Sent" used this tactic to excellent effect against the Doctor. The Doctor had plenty of time to run away, even cook soup, but not enough time to sleep.
