Cameos wouldn't make sense in this page, sorry! I had to recolor this blasted comic thrice! The power kept going out…on one side of the basement! And then my dad shut the computer off without saving my stuff first because it was making noises. Argh! Save first!
Plus I guess it helped me cool down a little. I almost wrote a very long, very angry rant
*starting here* about people who don't care to read these notes and just assume they know that Jhonen Vasquez is my art idol and I aspired to ape the very essnce of his style and the early archive are a @#$* mirror image of JTHM. And how I cannot possibly fathom how anyone gets that idea in their head other than the fact that CTV is referred to as “goth” styled and therefore I must read those kinds of comics, or someone mistook HIS STRIPEY PIRATE SHIRT for something JTHM wears. Or someone assumes you can only write violent comics if you read JTHM, completely ignoring the fact that Chuck Jones did violent cartoons,Harry Graham wrote violent poems and I also did a worse comic called Beck the Ferret for 9 years that had more pointless violence than you can shake a bloody stick at. And how it's obvious they don't care enough about what I say in these notes to even believe me when I say MORE THAN ONCE that I didn't even KNOW about that comic when I started CTV! If someone's gonna accuse me of ripping off a goth comic, for flippin' frogs sake pick one that at LEAST has the same proportions or at LEAST a similar cast, like freakin' Little Gloomy (the super scary monster show, being the “revamped style” she used to be bigger) or Scary Miss Mary who at least has beady shiney eyes. 2 comics I still haven't read but am aware of, at least it would make SENSE if someone compared Charby to that, rather than random-humored, big-headed stick figures like the ones in JTHM! Plus those who actually bothered to read my notes would know that I am aware about Hex's “almost similar” hairdo, I just wasn't when I designed the character OR the character that had the hairdo BEFORE Hex.*end*
Y'know, a rant like that, only much longer.
To all those that give me the consideration of reading what I say here, thank you. I'm sorry you had to see me get like this but it has me at my wits end right now. I'm usually very laid back about criticism but being taken for a style ape will simply not fly with me. Badly drawn violent attempts at anime about pirates does not equal a JTHM influence! How many times must I say it? Call the art crappy, it was, call it stupid or pointless! At least that is true! Don't make me link more junk at you to prove my point because I WILL upload every single bad thing I drew and show you what I used to draw and how I don't need no stinking goth comic to show me how to draw! Bill Watterson and Looney Tunes however, did give me inspiration.
Fairydust Vanish is a great sound effect.
The whole JTHM thing really doesn't make sense. Sure there's like... two or three elements that exist in both, but not even remotely enough to say you copied him and those elements weren't invented by Johnen Vesquez, either. I think it has more to do with his popularity than any actual similarities, in that so many people are aware of him that the small similarities overpower the many differences. Now, I like Jhonen Vasquez, but his artistic style is drastically different. DRASTICALLY! Furthermore, his sense of humor is ENTIRELY different. It's unpredictable, and bizarre. I find the randomness funny, but CTV has an in depth story that is planned and logical. And even back in the older pages that didn't relate to the overall story, the actions and event made sense. Now I'm not saying JTHM lacks a story or makes no sense, but the difference in that area is extremely evident when comparing CTV to JTHM. The differences are quite extensive when I contemplate it more, but I needn't elaborate, I think. CTV, to be completely honest, is my favorite comic ever. At times it's even been my favorite story ever, although it's really difficult to decide most of the time. Even so, CTV is absolutely astounding and will always be a personal favorite. Now it may seem odd that I'd be so enamored of this comic, but there are so many details that stun me with how much effort and thought are put into them. The characters have unique and enjoyable personalities, there are multiple levels of humor... really, the whole thing is an amazing experience. It's difficult to express properly, but one way of putting it would be to say it seems like it was written for me. Yeah... that sounds really weird, but it's the only analogy I can think of for how amazing this comic is to me. Most stuff that's popular, I find... hmm... bad in some way. Distasteful, unoriginal, boring, etc. But this here comic, I am SO glad to have found. Merely by random chance. Two random chances, in fact, combined to lead me here. Oh... I'm rambling again. Meh, well I'll post it all anyway, because it's all true.
He could be serious. You get to like K'ale so much that you need a little reminder. He IS a demon.
Haha elf, so what you gonna do, pull out a bow and arrow on me? I just love how Sadick spits in the face of traditional elven lore.
Not that my opinion matters much, but I don't usually like comics unless they have had a lot of time and effort put into them (I can smell cheapness), this includes originality.
It does remind me more of Zim than JTHM, but not overwhelmingly so, similarities stem from other factors like similar genre or character style (in a handful of cases)... and I like it more than Both Zim and JTHM (Granted I haven't read a lot of JTHM).
Dude... I like Zim, and Charby reminds me more of Zim than JTHM, which, actually, I've only ever heard of, never seen.
Also, I always thought that there was a Loony aspect to this! I'm so happy!
But, really, WTF does it matter? Unless you're worried about copyright laws, you do it how you do it, and leave it at that, no?
@Zenny: Huh?
If anything JTHM borrowed from Charby cause this is superior to JTHM
based on the fact that imitations tend to be inferior than the ones who develop their own style
1st of; neat-o rant!
2ndly; The ONLY resembleance to JTHM is a hairstyle or two... So quit the nogging-talking peeps! I mean, what is the odds for someone else to have (or use, considering it in drawing) the same hairstyle? Pretty big I'd say -.-'
3rd; ... Forgot this one, erm...
Well Amelius, if you feel that some are stalking you with critics, please shove 'em over to me - I'll gladly take care of their *cough* nonsense.
As EVER great page, you're doing a really good job.
But working 14 hours in a stray? O.o Darn, where do you get the energy to do so from? :O
(Can only draw for 10 mins. then I'm off to doing something else - hence I've no comic :-/ )
.... CTV doesn't remind me at all of JTHM.... I dunno what people are thinking (yeah yeah I know its 2 years too late to say). I didn't even think of Johnny when looking at Hex. As for the shirt... just no.
Then again you have to remember... people are idiots who think other people can't be oirigonal. ^_^
Loved that rant by the way.
I hate when this is compared to JtHM. I personally am not a fan of that, so if CtV was like it, how could I love this so much?
Anywayyyy, I love K'ale's body. He's awful sexy. :0
*blinks* hmm... i actually can't think of a comic i can complare charby too. it's orginal(at least to me) and creative. one of the reasons i LOVE charby and the gang. i mean who else has a magic immune demon hunter who is best friends to a demon who lives with about 15 demosn XD
You tell them. Honestly, with a gazillion of webcomics around, it is mathematically a chance a house computer couldn't calculate (so small) that you do a webcomic and DONT stumble upon something. Besides, ppl, everyone who's ever gone to art school knows you start by imitating someone, so you learn the technique. And Amelius has long gone beyond that to find her own style for this comic. I personally get sick and tired of a guy calling our bands first song "teen spirit" because the chords sound similar. So effin what, half the genre uses the same chord movement. It was definitely not something we intended... i should stop now...
Haven't commented thus far but felt the need to here. I love Jhonen Vasquez's stuff, and yes I saw some similarities to start but you've got your own thing going on here. Heck, we don't say anime is a ripoff of Mickey Mouse because of the big eyes do we? I run into similar situations with my writing, I'll be going on my merry way and found out someone's doing osmething similar. It happens. No big.
WTF? JTHM??? I don't see the resemblance. Your style is much smoother and the violence isn't anything particularly incriminating. Since when is gore copyrighted? (read the note just after rating. Hee hee, cuz I'm special like dat)
