Hello all! Yeah, it's a little late into Thursday with this update, but it couldn't be helped. Made a mistake and had a bit of a breakdown, but Nick took me out to cheer me up a bit. I lost the high res of this comic and I'm not too happy about it >_< I hate photoshop sometimes… Before I go, vote incentive is a better look at the first panel from the last update. I added a little more to it on the actual page, but I also cropped a lot off the sides.
Anyway, Nick's going to take over the rest of these notes.
Hey all EEN here. Thanks to the generous donations of the CTV community we are just $80 away from our goal and it looks like we'll be able to get through the holidays. After the holidays though we are going to be exploring a few options to try and get CTV to make some money without having to always be in donation mode. We'll probably continue the donation at least for a bit but we'll be able to lower the goal considerably until we are making enough money to do without donations.
First and most importantly we are looking at moving to either Evil Empire or Charby the Vampirate dot com. Why would we do so? Well, it turns out that most higher-end ad companies require you to have your own site so if we want to start making some serious ad money and getting into higher paying ad brackets we really don't have much choice. However Amy is very DD loyal and reluctant to “leave” so we would like to know the fans will support us if we go this road. We'll keep updating DD as a mirror but we'll gradually try and divert traffic over to our new site. If we do move Amy will be redoing some of the earlier pages to try and get CTV ready to eventually be printed and with luck published, so expect to see CTV revamped with new art.
Second we are working on a new comic which will be available in PDF format for 1-2 dollars depending on the page count. The comic is CTV Tales. The first issue which is about 1/3rd done explores the origins of Tony and future issues will cover other characters back story as well as side stories and shorts. It will, at least at first, in black and white and probably come out once every three months. Printed versions will follow if the demand is there for them.
Third and finally we are looking into CTV merchandise. Right now we don't actually make any money off of cafe press. What little mark up we have just goes to keeping the store open and those items are pretty much there just for hard core fans. We are looking to change that. We've been looking at both professional productions such as plushies as well stuff we can do in house. Right now we only have a button maker but we hope in the future to be able to provide CTV stuff for much cheaper than the Cafe Press store is right now and actually turn a profit by making things ourselves.
While we may also do some non-CTV stuff to try and make money but those are our plans for CTV 2010. Your feedback and suggestions would be much appreciated.
- Moving to your own domain / site. I'm in favor of this. I'm sure you've benefited DrunkDuck, which is nice, but I'm sure DrunkDuck will survive. The creator is most important. Besides, you can always still link to DrunkDuck as a good comics site and drive them traffic if you want.
- Your own site - hosting. Fast webhosts are delightful. I've personally had good success with the premium high-reliability host Pair Networks, but by my back-of-the-envelope calculations (20,000 pageviews/day, 1MB/page), you'd need 600GB/mo, and their High Volume HV-2 account costs $130/mo. Maybe one could run the current comic on Pair, and have the archives on something like Dreamhost (whopping bandwidth for a low monthly price).
- PDF comic format. People who can't run PDF viewers, such as Wolfchild9999, can import it to Google Doc's PDF reader right on their web browser.
- Merchandising & stores. Possibly higher-quality and higher-profit alternatives include Zazzle and TopatoCo. TopatoCo (on a link from their "about" page) say: "TopatoCo is exclusively for established, original, independent internet creators with a proven record of solid updates and a considerable existing audience." I quite seriously say *that's you*.
- Merchandise - what kind of button art are you offering / thinking of? You've piqued my curiousity. Buttons attach to the fabric of my cubicle quite nicely. They're also the sort of $1.99-$3.99 ($2-$4) item that people ordering other stuff such as books and t-shirts will throw in to the cart if they think it's cool - "Why not, it's only $3 more" (myself included).
- Merchandise - a "Death Conundrum" t-shirt would be nifty, in addition to the existing awesome Vampirate Logo and other shirts.
Okay, nobody panic, there's a perfectly logical explanation for that. Maybe it's Menu's evil twin from an alternate dimension, or maybe Menu thinks that it's opposite day! Or maybe Menu's stomach decided that it needed a vacation and is currently in the Bahamas working on a tan.
All I have to say is, make sure you fully understand what it'll take to have an entirely independent web site before you commit to that path.
I don't recall if I've EEN ever posted what does for a living or has experience in the area, but hosting and maintainance of a professional-level website involves a lot. Especially if you decide to host your own forums on the site, if you want to do that as well. I recommend outsourcing as much of it as you can to someone demonstrably competent.
For what it's worth, if you take the plunge and do the maintainance yourselves, PHP/MySQL is my day job and if you use that, I can be a volunteer tech support hotline should you hit any rough spots.
Oh yeah for the website name it should be CTV.com (or maybe Kelwood.com) if you're just moving CTV over but if you're moving both CTV, UIU, and maybe some things by nick than EvilEmpire.com would be better
I can only repeat what had been said befor. No matter where CTV goes, I am there to ;).
By the way the comic is Stunning....i always wonder how you can make so many charakterstorys keep on going....its incredibel!!!!
Just as luck would have it, the editing section is down again and I can't put in my next page until I get back home from Xmas with the folks.
So have a Merry Xmas Amy and Nick too!
See you in the new year!

Another excellent page. I also had a couple of thoughts to pass along about the business end. I'll PM those.

Is it just me, or is Zeno REALLY hyped up on the coffee? Also, again, REALLY like the art on this page, it's amazing!

I know what's wrong. Food poisoning! Only Zeno and Yiska didn't eat the chicken so they're the only ones not sick!

i keep looking back at this comic because i love the last panel haha. great work, really upsets the kind of dark humor this comic has.
Scythe Massakur at 4:35PM, Dec. 19, 2009
That was pretty much my reaction. Menu? Not hungry? Call 911! Call a witchdoctor! Call the vet! Anyway, something's up there. I suspect a conspiracy.

It seems that Zeno is terrified of falling back to sleep and getting another nightmare. Which is why he's freaky on coffee.
