You know something? I really like The Red Mage. I started a play through with 4 red mages on the classic version of Final Fantasy. I used to love Red Mage even though he tended to get weaker towards the end due to him missing out on all the highest level equipment and spells he was still very strong and useful. It has there for very much bothered me that almost every game since has massively dropped the usefulness of Red Mage to a weak and forgetable support class. Now I suppose you could argue this was always supposed to be the case but he just got lucky due to the Intelligence Bug in FFI but I don't care. FFI was very heavily taken from classic D&D but one of the few changes they made was replacing the always lack luster “bard” with Red Mage (though I'd say his stylish hat is a hint at his origins) and I personally think it was a vast improvment. I even visually based one of my more obscure characters well ment but little used boy mage Frey Von Skyler. However in looking up some tips for an all Red Mage part I must say I'm highly disapointed to see what has become of dear Red Mage, particularly in the MMOFFXI. I fear I may need to do something in the near future to at least attemp to correct the fan community's current impression of red mages as either dany fops or fetishized bunny girls. Yes I'm look at you Viera. No offense met to DD's own Jilly Foo.
Nalydw: Always glad to meet a fellow Red Mage enthusiast.
Now concerning the physics of this page normally you would indeed be correct but as you probably guess magic is involved here which as magic typically does is causing this to play out differently then it would on earth. To quote an example from âJust because a match lights on earth and wonât in space doesnât mean physics doesnât apply only that there are differences between the two conditionsâ. You'll note Sven's whip is glowing in that panel, that is because it is employing magic, in this case the generation of kinetic energy on command. The whip isn't really being used to club Riddy as it normally would and consequently causing harm via is weight bring brought down with force but rather in this case the whip is used simply as a medium to connect this magical force to Riddly to allow it act on him. Riddly isn't moving with the whip as on would in a normal case IE: you are hit from above and thusly pushed down, but rather being flung by the whip's enchantment up and away.
The whip is designed to do so it makes armored foes much easier to deal with and eliminates a good deal of the whips normal disadvantage. A sturdy individual in armor or with a shield can probably take a blow if braced for it and stands a good chance of rushing in close where Sven's whip (or most weapons with reach such as a spear) would be worthless. By having each blow potentially throwing the opponent backwards regardless of where Sven strikes them or with what part of the whip Sven ensures he can always keep his reach advantage and wear down his enemy. Additionally when thrown in the air like this the armor is just as likely to become a liability as it is to protect the user from harm as it can be difficult to get back in certain types of armor. Against non-armored opponents Sven has less to worry about as his whip is heavy enough to seriously bludgeon an unarmored foe and can when used properly even break bones. So in short âIt isnât a bug, itâs a featureâ.
Aren't they pretty good in FF Tactics? (not sure about FFTA) I think they were able to learn Doublecast. Well, regardless of if it was learned BY them or not, I know if you give a Red Mage that support ability. They pretty much dominate everyone. They can't cast the really good spells, but Doublecast makes up for that in it's ability to heal/hurt at the same time or two friends/foes (although MP drops pretty quickly). And two blizzards are just as good, possibly better, than one blizzara. Not sure if it's better than one blizzaga though. Even more useful if you know the elemental affinity and your positioned right. If you can judge it right you can kill an enemy with one spell and than hurt/kill another with the second >=D
And scratch the second and third things I said. I remember that they did learn it, but not as support, it was a move that (I'm pretty sure) only they learned. If you added in Turbo magic, hehehe. . . Burn baby, burn! (although you lose MP reeeaaaly fast)
I would have my unit learning stuff as one class, then just assign red magic to secondary and use it all the time. Even more useful if your main class can fight without MP in case you run out, than when you're building it back up the units still useful. Although Red Mages are pretty good with a sword any way so. . . =)
And sorry this was so long. I've been having a serious problem with long winded posts lately //'~'//
And I think the page is pretty good, except the physics for when he's whipped, even accounting for the intended comedic value, is a little wonky. Part of really good humor is to not force the funny, and to let it be a little more subtle. For instance, if the whip had been swung upwards to hit him, rather than down, than the exaggerated flying spin would have flowed better. (i.e. The whip traveled 'down' but he 'leaped up') It was still funny, but I got a little hung up on the fact that he should have been either knocked down, or at the very most, straight back. See? Aside from that I thought the page was really good, and. . . the flow seems a little jerky. I could be just over analyzing it (highly possible -_-) but just thought I'd mention it!
Sorry, long winded again. And that might have been, I don't know, excessive or something. Not my intention. Just not sure how well my point comes across. ^_^"
Second Best Punch Of The Comic So Far. The best, of course, being Ridley punching that dino-monster so hard that it's skeleton erupted out of it's arse.
Thank you!
I was waiting for that comeuppance for Sven. Normally, there's nothing wrong with sibling rivalry but we have to count in the factor that Trellion doesn't know that Cwen and Sven are siblings. All he knows is that there's a very rude dude that's pummeling the life out of a girl that happens to like him allot.
