Virgins and monogamy both are methods to control and prevent STDs, they limit genetic diversity and decrease reproduction rate, but the harm from the above two is much less then the harm of widespread STDs. That has caused some unwarranted attributes of pureness and virtue to be wrongly attached to virginity. Which has become ingrained in many cultures.
