Chapter 10 Page 19 - Storming Out

Most villians, would actually try and sell themselves as something other then what they are. I think I mentioned before that Knives originated as an NPC and antagonist in a D&D game I ran and I think one of my better ones. In that particular game Knives was a very young man who was head of the brute squad in an out of the way town. At the time he was an attack dog for the local law who wasn't on as short a leash as they thought. Knives in that game was particularly disliked as he was really just a bully to annoy the PCs. A side character rather then a driving villian and he both made trouble for the PC as a corrupt offical and happily brought them trouble whenever they got on the wrong side of the law. In fact he was only supposed to be even that at first, rather simply “the bad cop” who was actually a bad cop but the PCs wanted to start some trouble and I quickly expanded Knives character to give them trouble. Knives, in fact is named Knives simply because I didn't think he needed a name and my notes refered to him as “Knife Cop” which seemed lame. His organic, rather the roll based growth as a character is one of the reasons I think he is a strong character and one I enjoy having in my stories.

The Knives we see here is older by several years and has moved up considerably in the world now running his own city Velsuvious with a network of minions rather then just a three man brute squad under his command but I'd like to think this Knives got his start the same way as that one did and maybe I'll even find a way to show it in a short story one of these days.
