This page by me. This is the bonus last page of the chapter. I consider this page as #2 of “The Talking Sword Fables.” #1 would be the 1st 2 pages of this comic. There will probably be several of these through the entirety of this comic, marking the beginning and ending of story arcs. Their meaning is up to you to decide.
Art: I ran the lineart thru filters. I also drew most things in that clumsy simple way I find in medieval illustrations. Once again I was working for that medieval art feel. The dragon kinda breaks that because it looks too modern, though… lol see if any of you can recognize it.
Fable: By now I should be fluent enough in Middle English, that the writing is easy to read for anyone. I want to point out…
- Your and thy are interchangeable. ME does use your when it is poetic to do so. Hence I use it here for the alliteration of y. This has nothing to do with why Chase never seems to say thou, thy, thee, etc. (There's a story behind that.)
- The speaker of the last sentence is purposely vague. Either the knight is speaking to her raised sword, or the raised sword is speaking to the knight.
This page is somewhat text heavy, but I hope it's fun to read.
Read the companion comic FIGHT 1; both stories take place in the same world.

@Antikv: Yup, good eye... looks like mlai wanted an alien dragon... so it's like you said: Red Eyes Black Dragon from Yu-Gi-Oh... :-/
Antikv at 1:45PM, Jan. 24, 2009
red eyes black drgaon from yugioh?!
mlai at 8:17AM, Oct. 26, 2008
@ Gio: No, there's no rule. I just used the REBD because it's black and red. And since it appeared in a dream, I wasn't bound by the Pokemon "rule."
giovanni at 6:11AM, Oct. 26, 2008
so its like normal animals are pokemons and mythical or supernatural ones are yu-gi-oh! ?
giovanni at 1:19PM, Oct. 21, 2008
so thats why the drgon seemed familiar, its the red eyes

Storybook style! Cool! I like the french curveness that's going on on the border. Too bad Joe Quesada stopped using that, I was always really impressed by it. I tried it once, and it looked horrible. Not like this goodness... mlai never told me, but the dragon looks like the red eyes white dragon from yu-gi-oh ... oh wait, looks like mlai said it and andy9306 confirmed it... nevermind... I was close though... ^_^
andy9306 at 12:30AM, Oct. 19, 2008
Ah, that makes sense. More appropriate from a symbolism standpoint too. I admit I never really did more than glance at the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise. I like your design better than any of yours by the way. Less chibi/robot/children's toy.

@ Gio, Lilac, Alej: Continuing the style of her dream story. @ JNP: The art turned out... okayish. I was trying to mix multiple styles and... it's ok. The dragon is totally not medieval because {more on that below.} The animals are in that old quaint style. The knight is in a more luxurious medieval style. I noticed that while medieval artists' anatomy/perspective weren't always great, they did lavish a lot of attention to cloth folds... so I went with it. @ Royce: Thanks. And I like how you don't give up in the face of RL adversity (I read your profile). @Pat: Metroid... yeah I did think about using Samus at 1 time... but (1)she's very well-known since the new games came out, and (2)she's too powerful. @ Aghammer, Andy: It's the Red Eyes Black Dragon. Take a good look. :) Yes, part of it is a joke. The other part is I didn't draw a medieval dragon, while everything else is medieval, to symbolize that this evil menace is something "alien." Not E.T. alien, per se. Rather, it is not native of that time and place.

If I had to guess I would say that the dragon is the blue-eyes white dragon from the Yu-Gi-Oh series. Doesn't fit perfectly, blue-eyes doesn't have horns and is generally more uniform in design. However, it seems likely to me, as a joke, to use it in contrast to the Pokemon rule for the animals in the regular story.

I see what you mean by the dragon, he reminds me a bit of Ridley from the Metroid series. I don't think he is though, that doesn't quite seem like your style.
roycemarie at 4:32PM, Oct. 17, 2008
Beautiful.
JustNoPoint at 1:32PM, Oct. 17, 2008
Really interesting art you have here. And that last line really sets her tone. I couldn't write something like this in 100 years haha, I barely do good enough with just dialogue =p And I am a sucker for well drawn dragons!
alejkhan at 9:26AM, Oct. 17, 2008
Very fun! Very pretty. I think you really pulled off the medieval style without breaking too much away from the manga-ish style of the comic.
Lilac at 8:33AM, Oct. 17, 2008
Nifty!
giovanni at 8:16AM, Oct. 17, 2008

Aghammer at 7:43AM, Oct. 17, 2008
