105. Gravity, Very Pretty
usedbooks on Nov. 14, 2010
Newton claimed to have been inspired by an apple tree, and there is no reason to doubt the story. Inspiration is found in strange places. (The lemon thing is just a joke.)
Gravity is now considered scientific law rather than theory. The difference is subtle. Laws are theories which are not being actively contested and are generally accepted as the best current model for a phenomenon. Is gravity a fact? That is immaterial. Science is not concerned with facts. Its only purpose is to come up with ways to explain observations and predict trends. So, whatever model works for the most accurate prediction/calculation is fine – and of course, different models often have benefits over each other in different trials… so it is a journey of discovery and modification. Science leaves “facts” to historians and “truths” to philosophers and theologians. ;)
I wanted to use the artist's name for the last panel, but the “Lemon Tree” doesn't have such a simple history. The version I listened to as a child was sung by Peter, Paul, and Mary. However, it was written by Will Holt, who translated it from a Brazilian folk song Meu limão, meu limoeiro, which was arranged by José Carlos Burle and sung by Wilson Simonal. Quite a few other singers and groups have performed the song over the years.

I had a clever thing to say but after reading the other smarter comments decided just to put a smiley: :)

One of my favourite inspiration stories is the one where Aristotle ran down the street naked after sitting in a bath and noticing the water level go up, thereby discovering buoyancy! ...or was that Archimedes?

@Canuovea: According to The Devil's Dictionary, "HISTORY, n An account, mostly false, of events, mostly unimportant, which are brought about by rulers, mostly knaves, and soldiers, mostly fools."

Historians don't deal in facts, they deal in supposition based on possibly reliable evidence which most of them secretly don't actually trust but have to go with until someone digs something better up. Okay that's being pessimistic. And curse you mathematics! Curse you for having facts! Bloody logic! Bah, I'm just jealous because a three week old weasel can do math better than me.

@usedbooks: I actually had to read the author comments to get the joke, since I'm not familiar with "Lemon Tree" the song. But about church -- LOL! I would be tempted to do the same, and did doodle on them when younger. Guess it's a common factor.

Spot on re science. The only facts are mathematical, until one gets to theoretical math. So how many dropping apples does it take to come up with a theory? And does it take more or fewer dropages if the apples are lemons? Where's a scientist when you need one?

@hark: Yep. That's the result of comic artists making the same illustration/joke over and over again. XD He never said he was near any trees either, just watching them -- I'd imagine probably through a window. One of my favorite inspiration stories is of Galileo. He found his inspiration in church. He got bored during services and was watching the motions of the chandelier (it was hoisted up after cleaning, so it would sway throughout services). He was so bored, in fact, that he started timing the swings and watching the angles and came up with pendulum theories. XD Incidentally, when I first started Gelotology, I drafted strips on church bulletins during services.

I thought being clobbered over the head was the standard method of getting inspiration (its my method with my comic!)

It is surprising how many people believe Newton was hit on the head by an apple and that inspired him, rather than just watching them fall (which is the story he actually told.) Ooooh, wierd, I made a smart comment! Didn't realise I could do that.

Well, when life hands you lemons...

Aww, this is MUCH funnier.
