106. Public Decency
usedbooks on Nov. 21, 2010
Every few years, schools adopt new textbooks (if they have the funding), and these vendors frequent conferences. Sometimes the teachers get to have some input in the choices. I remember seeing them at the conferences I attended with my parents.
No, there were no censored text books – at least not in West Virginia. In my school, we saw the opposite effects. Usually phalluses and profanities added to various texts by the previous text book recipients. This was, of course later in my schooling. In grade school, we were required to purchase our own EXPENSIVE text books. :P Only later did our school system become logical by providing us with books each year.

It doesn't matter because it is all wrong anyway. That's high school science for you. Unless you're in the IB program, in which case this is high school science for you: AHHHHH!!!!! It's either worthless or stress to the level of insanity.

Another thing about school textbooks is that if they have any jokes in them, they tend to be really lame! My science books were written by a guy who though he had a good sense of humour, but really he didn't.

gotta love lame (cough cough AMERICAN cough cough) public schools :P

Your grade school experience sucked. Maybe it taught you the value of education? Regardless, I'm glad to not live anywhere near a Bible belt.

oooh. I worked for a few book publishers and, yes, science and history books have to be updated, but the use of SIX colors (because you can't just use 4/c, oh no, you need to add spots, too) was simply to rationalize the greater expense of the new editions. And you know what, all that color tends to Distract young readers from the content. Plus, with all the additional pictures and charts, etc., there are more pages that add literal weight to the book. Have you seen the little nine year olds who look like stooped gnomes coming out of a mine what with those backpacks that are as big as they are? OK - I'm done. thanks for letting me vent.
