021 - Funeral For a Friend

Dun dun DUUUUUUUUUUN!
Just as a heads up, I will be leaving for Otakon in Baltimore in one week (as a patron, not as an artist, unfortunately). But do not despair, for there will still be comics! Monday will be a normal comic while Wednesday, Friday, and the following Monday will be a special set of comics. Here's how it works:
Before I'd even considered doing Hatpire as a full-fledged webcomic, I mde strip #01 in the archive. A friend of mine saw it and “replied” with his own, and then I “replied” back. Doing this little comic battle helped me realize that yes, Virginia, there IS a Hatpire, and lo and behold, the comic was born! The first three strips mark the first round of our comic battle. You will find it entertaining. :)

Oh, a plague, cool! (I never thought to ask anything, I thought he was just a 'creature'.)

He is neither, he's a Plague Doctor. :) Plague Doctors were around during the Black Death. They wore waxed robes and gloves (for protection), a doctor's hat, and a long, beaked mask that IS very reminiscent of a bird. They stuffed the beak with herbs that were meant to ward off plague. Some reports (and a famous print) have them with sticks that they used to examine plague victims or to keep said victims at bay. Schnabel is named after the print/engraving from the 1600's which is entitled "Doktor Schnabel Von Rom", translated to "Doctor Beak of Rome".

I have to ask, is hatpire's friend a crow or a vulture?
