12 Hours of Party
Awesometown on March 8, 2008
There are times when I make comics I'm sure will rile people up, and times when I'm just hoping for a smile or a laugh… this comic I was only hoping for a laugh. There was no major issue I was responding to, not particular story I was commenting on. I was going on a short vacation and needed to get a comic done early, the only thing I knew was going to be relevant by the time the comic ran was the annual race… which is known for it's parties and drinking.
I hardly expected when I returned to work to be greeted with a letter to the editor. I've been waiting a year for someone to write a letter to the editor because they took offence to my comic, why would this comic rile someone up like never before?
I laugh that he makes his point that I shouldn't have made fun of drunks… then he makes fun of my last name… for no reason whatsoever. I think Carl Hoyt is drunk.

Oh, that's just rich. I wish letters to the editor came with return addresses. So I guess Carl Hoyt doesn't realize that the entire tailgating area is filled with drunk high school students and that there is usually an alcohol related death at the race at least every other year.

Man. I saw this in the paper when I was down. The "fans" were probably too drunk to know you were making fun of them.

Honestly, if I were to meet someone who blindly came to town at this time of year and observed the races and what they do to this town, I would apologize to them. It is pathetic how this annual race is used as excuse for everyone in town to become a drunken spring breaker, and hang out in a massive 3 day long party at a racetrack. The fact that the people in this town look at it as part of their right to "have fun" is sickning... people do have a right to have fun, but that doesn't include being fall down drunk for three days, being obnoxious, lewd, ect. It doesn't excuse the thousands of laws that are broken every year at the races from vandalism, rape, drug use, underage drinking, polution, etc. Carl Hoyt can be offended all he wants that I would imply everyone at the races was drunk... either he has never been to the races or he is one of the drunk assholes who thinks it is his right, because there is no point in trying to deny it.
