Chapter One Page 18
D0m on Aug. 10, 2007
Hm. This looks like a return to the “Page 13 syndrome”. I love how this came out in the end. Maybe it looks good to me because I was watching Flash Gordon… ( the new one ). Anyway, I experimented with lighting and soft brushes, so you guys can finally see how daylight is going to look in this comic.
What do you guys think of the outpost and the lighting? Were you getting tired of the night scenes? Where're the two headed? And where are those darn henchmen??

I always have trouble seeing really dark pictures like this one - I guess my computer screen just sucks. *sigh*

Gosh, your art is so beautiful... on every page, you had to make a masterpiece. I'm envious!

I'd definitely follow mlai's recommendations on the lineart. On the lighting maybe try instead of flat painting your highlights on, varying your brushes a little to maybe a wetter brush or simply use some gradient fills and then color dodge them on different layers. Gradients will help give the piece more ambiance and help the color theory of the entire work harmonize. I'd highly recommend starting to use those over any flat paint highlights you did to help give the light some new glow. :D I hope that helps! Still looks great and I'm enjoying your updates.

I really like the sky on this one. It's very subtle.

That was a pretty dog after I clicked vote. Is that your dog? Your painterly dreamlike surreal style must be what's attracting this large crowd. Funny how they just find you, huh? If I can give you any advice, it would be to consider revising your linework approach when you're drawing architecture. See, your buildings aren't symmetrical. Lines aren't straight. That in itself is ok because you're evoking a surreal style. But you add the thick crooked black outlines, and I'm not so sure anymore... Is he trying to be surreal, or does he just fail at drafting? Ligne claire linework art style demands precise accurate uniform black lines. I'm not suggesting you use a ruler. Rather, I suggest you either make the black lines thin, or eliminate them altogether. Let your swathes of color do the talking. Or, you vary the outline width by a lot. Make black part of your palette, rather than just using them in the lines. Or, you go ligne claire all the way in terms of linework detail and precision. But that's the most challenging. I don't know what's best. You think about it. Writing this comment inspired me to go to Art & Literature Corner to make a thread on ligne claire. Go check out the topic if you're interested. It has PRETTY PICTURES.

I think it looks like an evil version of the buildings on Tattooine in Star Wars. Maybe it's just the moody lighting that makes it look sinister.

Great Stuff D0m! I love your color choice, lighting and such. Keep it up with the great vistas.
freefall_drift at 6:43AM, Aug. 13, 2007
As usual, I like the painting style. You ask about lighting. I have trouble seeing the two characters. If they are the focus of attention, they fail the squint test. Squinting at the screen, I see is the door, the green glow and the horizon. the characters blend into the background. Maybe some highlight glints on the characters to make them stand out. Other than that, great panel.

jissai at 3:52PM, Aug. 11, 2007
darn old imortal woman and they'er rudness!
dueeast at 3:18PM, Aug. 11, 2007
You got mesmerized by the "Just a bit better than mediocre but still can't tear away from the show" syndrome with the new Flash Gordon, too? (It happened to me also. :D) Man, I hate it when that happens...
Vindibudd at 12:56PM, Aug. 11, 2007
I'm not mad, how do you get "mad" from "Looking good. Again"? Dude, you are looking good. And "again" refers to the fact that, yes, you always look good, or at least have looked good in the past. Nice page. Not mad. Not even irritated. In fact quite happy.
blntmaker at 10:28AM, Aug. 11, 2007
I love the panned out shot! I almost feel like the "shadow lady" was talking to us to when she spoke... Still dark and edgy as ever, man! Great times! Um....Flash Gordon???? The NEW ONE???? Man, what's wrong with you?!
D0m at 10:19AM, Aug. 11, 2007
Vindibudd- Why do you sound mad? =P GSP- Thanks! You know, I'd love to see you paint your comic too! That'd look so awesome... -drools- FAL- Hehe, I try and take every bit of advice I get from amazing artists like yourself. Besides, NANO is so incredible with it's poses and angles too! Notlikelytocare- Thanks for the compliment, man! What I will say is that by fooling around with Photoshop, you can learn much!
D0m at 10:16AM, Aug. 11, 2007
Man, you guys give the best comments ever. I don't even know how to thank you all, other than continuing this comic and putting in as much work as possible! HarryQ- Thanks for all of you comments, Harry! I'm glad you can feel the atmosphere- I didn't think I could have this big an effect on a reader. jmt- Thanks! Tantz Aerine- I gotta say I look forward to your comments a whollle lot. ( And for good reason!) Since I doubt anyone else is going to spend time to read this, I'll tell you that the henchmen are very much alive, and these two are on a border of the Shadowlands- hence, the sun! Themidge28- Hey! Thanks for the crit. You know, I think the reason I didn't wash the place more in light is because I didn't have a good photo reference.. @_@ Ah, well! Dueast- Always great to read your comments, too! Thanks much, and I'm glad you like the outpost! Popenfresh- Thanks!
notlikelytocare at 10:10AM, Aug. 11, 2007

FAL at 8:36AM, Aug. 11, 2007
Many people just show the faces up close and forget about these long shots, but you just took the whole page to show their situation. Good job, D0m!
