#9 Shadow of the Hamster
Evil Emperor Nick on Aug. 22, 2007
Amy & me love midnight store raids. We are extremely spoiled because in her homestate there is an awesome 24 hour store called Meijer, where you can get just about anything. In Cleveland however there is only the 24 hour K-Mart which isn't so hot and the 24 hour grocery store. As such we often find ourself running out at 12 AM to purchase a later dinner cook it and clean up all in the middle of the night. Our favorite is Midnight Spaghetti because we make a whole lot and then let it soak in the sauce so a few days later we have awesome left overs. Truthfully though Amy & me have limited time and she has a strong weakness for insant food so often time these raids result in a weeks worth of microwavable instant meals for Amy & Rootbeer for me.
Well there she is Princess Sarah. You should all thank her because Sarah is the character which started this whole series off. I, playing the forum game, requested a picture of what Uma & Rodericke's kid would have looked like. When I saw it I decided there and then I wanted to do a comic with her in it & named her Vampire Princess Sarah on the spot, (This was a small tip of the hat to Vampire Princess Miyu though as Uma & Rodericke's daughter she would have actually been a Vampire Princess in the CTV universe as well a duality I quite enjoyed.) and wrote to Amy asking for permission to use the newly drawn character.
Amy, being Amy, not only gave me permisson but in fact drew me a special Vampire Princess Sarah picture too. One thing she did ask me is what series I was going to use her for to which I wasn't quite sure of at that point. Amy went onto ask if I could find a home for a few other characters from the forum game which she really liked the designs for but didn't have a place in charby for. I said yes.
From there I combined 4 unused characters Amy had (Cyrian, Zosime, Damianos & Ezri you can actually find Damianos wandering around the demon market in Charby as a background character) with 3 characters of my own (Nigel, Skee, Viki plus Vampire Princess Sarah) and from there I wrote up a concept page and a 22 page script for the first issue.
Neither Amy nor I had time to work on the series at the time so the plan was to create a fan comic drawn comic & eventually ask one fan to take over the series. Well the fan comic went forward and despite several attempts with different artist the continueing series never went forward. This went on for years in fact with three different artists. Night School was kept alive by occasional updates to the fan comic which caused me and Amy to discuss the comic now and then but for the most part NS went cold very quickly and stayed that way for several years.
BTW: Thank Arya, Shippo, Scarry & others who kept the fan comic going during that time, and all the artists that had helped with Kojo Academy in its beginnings: Adri,B, and Stephy.

Amy and *I*!!!!!1!! (1 is inserted both purposely and strategically for effect) Why must you make a mockery of the English language?! Yes, Meijer is great. Though I'm surprised you have A) a 24 hour Kmart (perhaps I've mentioned to you that it should really have been renamed after they bought Sears to "S-Mart") and B) don't have a 24 hour Walmart (though Walmart is The Evil, and I'm glad that you don't shop there). And now for the ruthless and brutal criticisms! I really love the incredible range of emotion in the character (apparently Princess Sarah). The worry, the relief/joy and then the EVIL! This page in and of itself makes me laugh. And I mean that in the best possible way. The cat's transformation is similarly awesome! Thinking of cats, The Tick Vs. Season 2 came out a week or two ago, and it includes Armless but not Harmless. If you're familiar with the animation, it's good, but not especially detailed much like any good series from the 90s which I love. Anywho, in Armless but not Harmless, The Tick is challenged by The Forehead that "If you guys are so evil, why don't you just...eat this kitten!" And when they move that kitten in for its close-up, man is that one ridiculously cute kitten! Panel 7 just kind of reminds me of it. Man, The Tick is so good! The ridiculous wings on the hamster are a very nice touch. Contrary to what some others may think I think the angles are working quite well. For this page in particular, the first three are about the same angle, but are progressively closer, which is a nice effect. The swooping in caught from below is perfect (I'm not sure there is another way to do that, at least not another good way to do that). The ever so subtle angled down view of a child smiling is incredible! And the looking up into the evil grin, also amazing! Dang it! The angles alone leave me wanting a thesaurus! My vocabulary is not extensive enough! As for this page in particular, there is nothing I can see which can be improved. THIS PAGE GOES TO 11! (which is, in fact, louder than 10) All of the previous pages have also been of similar quality, and I am just far to lazy to comment on them all, as I didn't read them until today (technically yesterday, as it's passed midnight while I've been writing this). This brings me to my other thought. I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't know until today, as no one had told me, but congratulations be to the Amy and Nick! Perhaps we can start calling you Namy or Amick? Though your names are far to short for that to really work effectively. But not being informed for a full 2 weeks, I feel really left out of the loop! Sure, maybe I should have started visiting this little dark alley on the internet a little earlier, but I blame you! May your comic become so popular that you are crushed your own celebrity! OK, I don't really want you crushed in any way. And keep up the good work with this comic. I'll be checking back regularly now. I've even put in nicely in my webcomics bookmarks. You have been warned.

Love the comic, Amelius + Nick, it looks and reads great. Love the character designs and everything. The humor, and the art, etc... ^^

You know, I really shouldn't like this, but I do. I'm generally not a fan of the cutesy manga style you've got going on here or this type of character designs, but the hilarious writing reeled me in pretty much right from the start. I think what impresses me the most here is how you're consistently improving - the comic timing is getting better, the anatomy is shaping up, this is all on a really good track and full of funny moments already. Art-wise, I think your page layouts would benefit from some more variation in angles. The characters are mostly shown the same size and at eye level. This isn't a huge issue because the tone you've set doesn't necessarily require outrageously dynamic page structures, but a bit more variation in that department could also be used for comedic effect. As far as the writing goes, for my tastes you occasionally go a bit overboard with the slang shorthand (lemme, gimme, whatcha etc), but that might just be my preference, I don't know.
