The reason: Because he is an idiot. It always seemed strange to me why he would hide the compass in the cave, why not just hang on to it? The first two panels is Alis tying the bottle back around Myau's neck, I like to think that Myau is fond of the bottle and wants to keep it, plus I don't like the way he looks drawn without the bottle, so I'm having him keep it.
