Mystery Update: Rex Sketch
SmartSpriter on Sept. 6, 2007
Tired, busy. News later, maybe.
Here's a horrible sketch of Rex I did a while ago. I'm gonna try and rework my style a bit, and get better. Especially with clothes. Any tips, or somewhere to get tips, on how to learn to draw clothes realistically? (specifically the folds in the cloth)
Hiatus ends Monday.

I'm afraid. Gotta start with the basics, I s'pose.

Yeah, Obata-sensei's the king. Both Death Note and Hikaru are incredibly realistic and detailed, so I should probably start looking at those. I hope you're right in saying that, copying/observing/practicing will help me notice patterns and get better. It seems far-fetched with something random like wrinkles, but hopefully you're right.

Well, you could copy some mangas. Stealing from the pros is what future pros are. Obata-sensei (Hikaru no go, Death note) have awesome details in the clothing. The wrinkles are sometimes overly detailed and a bit hard but if you keep practicing you'll begin to notice patterns and start applying your own style. Now, the head is sorta unexplainable. Mainly the hair/headgear, what's that supposed to be? I think the main cause is the positioning of the eyes in combination with the pointy shape of the head. Now, I use examples from Suzuka as they have really nice hairdo's. The same with Full moon wo sagashite. The hair is sorta complicated but have a lot of details that you could use. You can go nearly anywhere for the shape of the head. but I prefer a Negima style, because it's easy and at the same time gives a lot of character. If you want a freebie style I'd recommend Genshiken. They really use a little bit less photoshop patterns and draw a little bit more. All of the above, save for Genshiken, are downloaded here: http://www.mangaspot.com

"In things that hang down and are fully extended, there usually isn't any rinkles" What? Take this nice little shirt for instance: See those shadows and highlights in the chest-area? I want to know where am I supposed to put those, if there's any trick to knowing how/where. And the only time there aren't "any rinkles" is when the clothing is being stretched. If it's idle, there has to be slight folds unless, for instance, the shirt is too small and thus tight on the person.

Well, the confusing thing about Rex is his design. Even I'm not 100% positive of the anatomy of his clothes. It's kinda a cloak/cape/vest thing going on. I'm talking, like, wrinkles in the clothes.
