new page!! I had trouble with this one, artistically… you can probably tell (hope not though!) for some reason it just wasn't coming together right. I think it's because so much of it is multi-person panels, which is harder than one-person panels.
I read “Maus” today (part 1… I have to track down part 2 now) and it made me cryyy!! poor mice. It's a really good story– a memoir about the author's father and his time in Poland during the Holocaust. I just got up to where he and his wife are sent to Auschwitz.
It's by Art Spiegelman, who's coming to GW this Thursday and I'm gonna MEET HIM so I gotta get hip to the groove, so to speak. You guys have heard of Maus, right???
Anyway, enjoy the page. I agonized a little. mehh.
I also learned ho much my vaguely OCD side loooves drawing patterned fabrics.. and I realize now I added the white text a little too close to the speech bubble. I'll fix it later…
I think I might stick to this black outlining stuff…
kthx!
oh and Theorah's London Underworld got featured! check it out if you haven't already… she's one of the best on DD!

Very nice... I love how big he is! I loved Maus but don't want to read it again.. was too much. Everyone should read it at least once! You get to meet Spiegelman? How awesome is that! I'd love to get a chance to shake his hand.. I hear he's a weird duck :D I love the pattern on her shirt... excellent.

ps: Theorah: I think your comic has good emotion in it; think of the camaraderie that Amelia has with her thief-friends... and the boss' feelings of insecurity/hatred towards the upper class... they haven't culminated completely yet, but that's what the climax is for!

Thanks everyone for all the comments! :) UsedBooks & Peipei: yeah bad idea... also, demonizing parents proves to be an easy route to characterization... (although also, often, a sign of cheap writing, perhaps) Jonko: *mocks* nyah nyaah! Oh well, at least you've met me. not a bad consolation prize. (jk jk) Emily Elizabeth: yup, Jadwiga is a habitually pissed girl. & yay maus! Hyena Hell: yay maus (again!) Twilight: lol... lots of subtlety here. Theorah: yeah yippee! :D It's because my creative writing professor teaches a class called "Jewish Lit Live", which I'm not in, but am invited to whenever famous authors stop on by. She's also the one who managed to snag Michael Chabon! yay for Faye! (Faye Moskowitz, published author!) I read the second part of Maus today; also very emotional. (In fact, I just got back from a seven hour reading/cafe snacking stint at Borders... WOW. I also read three volumes of FABLES (saving myself $45, because I of course didn't buy them), and bought #5 and am already working on that one!) I found Maus to be so tragic, and yet the little animals were so adorable. so it made it sadder :'( At first I drew the dad bigger but he looked really disproportionate, so I had to tone it down, and settled on giving him Incredible Hulk hands. ;) maybe SOMEDAY I'll go back and fix this panel, but at the moment I'm a bit exhausted with it. Thanks everyone for les comments, merci beaucoup!

OMG you are SO lucky!!! First my favorite author and now one of the most renowned comic artists of america???? Maus is amazing, the holocaust really freaks me our normally, but I enjoyed Maus very much, the narration is so real (a recording, right?) it just has a more personal touch to it, I really enjoyed it, its very touching. Nice page, except maybe for the top panel. the perspective is a little off on the father, which wouldnt bother me so much, I think it wouldve been nice to have more focus on how daunting he is, you can feel it in the sister, but not in the dad. The second panel is very nice though, great body language :) thank you for your nice comment, but my comic isnt that great ^^; I have yet to make something as emotional as this comic, thats my next step as an artist! :D

Well, I guess we can all tell who the favorite is
HyenaHell at 4:46AM, April 1, 2009
Maus is excellent, of course- rec reading for anyone who does comics/ graphic novel work.
Emily Elizabeth at 4:29AM, April 1, 2009
Jadwiga doesn't look happy, understandably! XD Omg, I love Maus, the art is stunning and the story...! You're soo lucky!

WHAT!? Spieglman is COMING!!!??? I am so f*cking jealous, WHY DID I GRADUATE EARLY!!???? AGGGHHH... (tears, my only chance ever to meet a real comic artist...) Anyway, I like the page. Must say I think you're really good at drawing the wrinkles on clothes. I need to work on that. (I'm still mad that you're meeting Spieglman though...)

Oh god x.x...I know that all too well. It is just so so bad and unhealthy to play favorites with kids x.x why won't parents see that?
usedbooks at 10:21PM, March 31, 2009
Ouch. Playing favorites with your kids. Never a good thing.
