And so reprisals are set up…The announcement in the papers is an adaptation of a couple of original ones that have survived from newspapers of the time to this day, complete with phrasing and reasoning. Here is one example, an announcement to the people of Crete, for anyone who wants to take a look, even if it's in Greek.
Photobyjt: Thank you for the comment! And yes you are right. The notice in Greek is a general one (not a specific reprisal one where number of executions are mentioned) stating the gist of what I put in its counterpart in the comic. It is non chalant and I think that was part of the treatment, in that they wanted it to look like it didn't matter to them, because that would strike more fear in the hearts of the occupied.
Thanks for sharing that piece of history!
I can't read Greek but it seems so non-nonchalant, oh, "what did you do today, honey?" "Killed a 150 civilians to prove a point, can you pass the salt? The meat needs a little seasoning..."
Those are someone's mother, father, son, daughter, etc... 8-(
Interesting how they assign a number of, basically, sacrifices for "atonement" rather than arresting responsible parties. But I guess that happens when one can't track down those actually responsible (or at least might discourage those responsible by tgreats of innocent deaths...).
And so it begins. In many cases the reprisals were so severe as to stop resistance from growing anywhere there wasn't a well organized apparatus and close Allied support. We forget just how exceptional successful resistance to an occupying army is.

The Germans did this in Norway too. It worked.

usedbooks: They also want to ensure those resisting don't get support from the populace. // bravo1102: very true.
