To be fair I always assumed it's a wonderful life was a riff on a Christmas carol.

That's how the movie was first sold in Hollywood. "A contemporary American take on A Christmas Carol."
As only Frank Capra can do it.
And we'll get Jimmy Stewart ,fresh from his war service, to be Mr. Everyman.
