'Complications,' said the doctor, his voice dry, annoyed, casually setting my child aside as the bedsheets soaked in blood.
It made not a sound. Not a sniffle or a whimper.
The sadness in my mother's eyes… the anger in my father's.

The city would not forgive my sin.”
