Scene One p4

I had a DARK SHADOWS thing going on in the earliest drafts of the KILLING DEMONS script. I exercised most of it as we took the book in a more serious direction, but left this one page in as kind of a secret tribute to the early Barnabas Collins appearances (which, in turn, often riffed on Bela Lugosi's dramatic entrances in the original Dracula).
More importantly, this page also marks the first full appearance of the adult Joshua Brand, as well as the first actual meeting of our two story protagonists.
Brent had a fun time with Joshua's cane, which is exaggerated from the original script, but in a good way. If you follow it throughout the book, you'll see Brent playing around with it in terms of perspective, shadowing and lighting. In some ways, he made it into a character all its own, certainly beyond the intentions of your humble writer.

Nice. I particularly like the prologue pages. The art is quite nice, save for poportional anomalies that occassionally creep up here 'n' there. I prefer the organic flow used to render the demons to the almost geometric outlook of the gun-weilding Jeremaih. The fade into the shadows page of Jerry and da kid was swell. However overall it's great art and a promising story. U seem to have a knack for drawing demons. Lol Props

Reposting this on a different page. Figuring out Drunk Duck as I speak. Treelov, you have a good point. I recall Peter had envisioned this stark light that Jeremiah and the young Joshua were to walk into. It may have been a single panel that became an entire page. Peter wrote his script as a guideline for the artwork. It was ripe with suggestions and input but really left quite a bit up to artistic license. As I said in my previous post, we were kind of figuring it out as we went along. It'd be easy for me to find issues with work that I did some time ago. Inking was certainly new to me. It's a different way of thinking. I thought that I had to sacrifice detail and had to be more stylized. We learned a lot as we went along and I hope that it shows throughout the book. Check back in and let us know.

Thanks for the comments and the questions. I used markers to tone the pages then used Photoshop to polish them up. I was experimenting as we went along. I began to realize certain redundancies as we progressed and then it became a battle between continuity and progression.

Digg the style of the first several pages. Aside from the occasional anatomy anomoly, it's well done. But....then...out of nowhere, comes a Miller-style splash of the chump with the weapon. Did the artist get a spastic urge to copy that style, or did a new artist jump im? I'm a bit confused on that one. Wouldn't bother me so much , but the style of the first pages was a bit more unique and refreshing.

Please tell me what medium you use to color your pages. Traditional watercolor? Markers? Or Photoshop cleverly disguised as traditional media?

Like how you drawed his suite. Haven.t delved into the story yet but this page seems intriguing.

Ooo...kay. Wow, I didn't think a proff coming onto DD would be a bad thing. I mean Mr. Granger and them are published too. Witchblade was up here. Eh, I can't afford to buy comic books like this anymore so to see something that has grown a following and is willing to come back here and put up some of their stuff for free I am pretty much all for. Besides even if I had the money I don't think I would have found this title, even if it is right up my alley as far as the storyline goes. As to the art and the content...Lovely and compelling - disturbing and yet addicting. Thank you for sharing some of the inner workings for such a creative effort! more please?

Everyone, thanks for the comments! They're really appreciated by both Brent and myself. New pages will begin posting for the week tomorrow. Always feel free to ask questions, which we'll answer as best we can. Brent and I will also be posting some additional materials to the forum as well. Hope you continue to enjoy the book!

it's funny to see anonymous peeps arguing. Anyhow, yeah these are notes from the creators mouths, specially written for drunkduck. I'm sorry if you feel personally diminished by it :) It's my hope everyone enjoys as many forms of opportunity and entertainment as we can provide on DrunkDuck. I'm also not sure how 'How to get published' information is more valuable than story and art insight, and what the author or artist may have been thinking. 99% of comics on drunkduck aren't really concerned with that info... plus honestly... there is plenty of that out there. Enjoy the entertainment! Life's too short to get all grumpy and worked up.

Just amazing work.
anonymous at 2:01PM, March 19, 2007
The real thing? There has been no responses at all to any of the posts by the writer or the artist, just information regarding the story in the book. Maybe if some questions were asked about how to get published or about layout or about anything, this might be of some value to the DD community.

I agree with the second anonymous. I don't have a 'local' comicbook store, and what I do have access to is very limited, so I don't mind this at all. Also, yes! I love the content from the creators. It bugs me when they just slap some pages up and everyone fawns over it.

Fantabulous! -L.

Nice work here.
anonymous at 10:56AM, March 19, 2007
At least the creators talk about their work. It's better than the pro comics that just post the pages. We know that this is the real thing. Not just a scan anyone could have posted up.
anonymous at 9:05AM, March 19, 2007
I didn't think DD was set up to promote published comics. It's sort'a like spam. There are millions of comic books on the rack at my local comic book store I could check out. I come to DD to participate in the community and view the obscure (comic writers who are not seeking glory & fame). What next, Batman?
Mr Mustard Seed at 8:29AM, March 19, 2007
I exercise my dark shadows, too ... imagine Barnabus Collins on the Stairmaster next to me watching Regis and Kelly ... HIGH-larious... Good luck on the feature and in moving forward on Keeling Demons ... ;-)
