DD Update

The top ten is now based on a 4 day average of the amount of UNIQUE hits you get- the overall comic ranking as well.

This means that People with bigger archives don't have a natural advantage, like when it was just based on views. This also means that people who've had a lot of hits in the past won't be impossible to shift from the top ten because it's only based on 4 days worth of hits.
This way if you advertise your comic a bit and have links to it all over the place you'll get more people looking at it from all over and you can move up the comic ranking.

We're thinking of excluding comics that haven't updated for either 12 or maybe just 4 months- The logic here is that if they're still popular enough to be that high in the rankings without updating they don't need the extra exposure and the authors aren't likely to be around to mind. But that is up for discussion!

Unique hits is a great way to generate the top ten, and probably the "truest" real-time indicator of a comic's reach on a daily scale.

Ozoneocean at 5:49AM, June 1, 2016

There's been talk of something like a "greatest hits" list for the non-updaters... or maybe a second version of the DD front page that just has completed comics? I'm not sure what way is best.

Ozoneocean at 5:47AM, June 1, 2016

I'm sorry I didn't see the recent action here before. Yes- comics that haven't updated in 4 months go out of the rankings. They still appear in searches and on the user profiles though ad if they add any updates they go right back in. The reasoning is that it gives updating comics a chance at more exposure, comics that aren't updating and yet are STILL popular enough to be ranked that high don't need the exposure and their authors aren't likely to be around to care much anyway. With the top ten as it has been for the last 2 years it hasn't included ANY non-updating comics because Hippie Van updated manually each week- it was based on likes, non adult comics and whether they'd updated in the last 4 weeks or so, so it was always about updating comics.

Ah okay, I think we were talking at cross-purposes. All good. ^_^

Prototype at 1:24AM, June 1, 2016

No, they changed it. Now only comics updated the last 4 months appear on the top 10. Before we had that persona4 comic and two more non updated one. But it's all good now.

irrevenant at 5:41PM, May 31, 2016

@Prototype: That's part of my point - the way it works now is weighted in favour of freshly-updated comics anyway. You don't need to actively exclude anyone. I'm not sure what makes you think the comics in the old Top Ten weren't updating though. The Top Ten was: Charby, Modest Medusa, Life and Death, Culture Shock, Simply Sarah, Fusion, Demon Eater, Heroes Alliance, Monster Soup and The Pirate Balthasar. All those titles have updated in the last month and most of them in the last week. The ranking may have been static but the titles themselves aren't.

Prototype at 1:39PM, May 31, 2016

Looking now it seems like all the old (and smelly) non-updated comics are thankfully gone from the top10 and the comics list.

irrevenant at 3:36AM, May 31, 2016

Consider it roughly analogous to the music charts - it's based on current sales, so it's dominated by new music. But if, for some reason, a song attains ascendency again (like Unchained Melody did when Ghost came out, or Bohemian Rhapsody did when Wayne's World came out) then it deserves it's spot amongst the other current big sellers.

irrevenant at 3:34AM, May 31, 2016

There's plenty of room for a healthy mix. It's unlikely that even half of the Top Ten would be completed comics especially if we're weighting the rankings based on current hits. If we find that there are lots of completed comics in the top ten, that would mean either that we have a lot of new readers (who are reading older comics because they're new to them) or that those comics are so incredibly popular that people just keep rereading and rereading and rereading them. In either case it seems to me like they deserve their spot. But I don't think it's likely to be an issue. Weighting based on number of recent hits favours comics that are still updating. If we find that the Top Ten *is* getting glutted with old comics then I'm sure we can revisit it, but it doesn't seem likely to happen and I don't think we should penalise the odd completed comic that is so awesome that it earns a spot on the charts.

Prototype at 1:59AM, May 31, 2016

I think it is important for DD to be an active place with new content. DD would seem like a dead site if new visitors find that the top10 is full of comics that hasn't updated in years and the author has long since abandoned the site.

irrevenant at 7:32PM, May 30, 2016

I disagree with excluding comics that haven't updated recently. If they're still popular enough to be that high in the rankings without updating they *deserve* to be. We are wanting/expecting the Duck to grow and those sorts of popular, successful, complete comics are exactly the sorts of thing we want new readers to discover. I'm probably *slightly* in favour of adult comics in the top ten since they've earnt the right to be there but can see more con arguments on that one.

Ozoneocean at 5:11PM, May 30, 2016

Good!I like the discussion:D

jerrie at 1:11PM, May 30, 2016

since you can't see an Adult comic unless you log in anyway, what difference does it make? if its in the top ten...so be it. I hate censorship.

cdmalcolm1 at 6:32AM, May 30, 2016

I like the new up date. And it is true that you most be logged in to see adult content. A nice start to shifting things around. And I agree with Dragonaur. There should be an option to censor adult content.

Ozoneocean at 1:03AM, May 30, 2016

It SHOULD be working Vino. I've tested this a lot and it always works for me. :(

VinoMas at 9:58PM, May 29, 2016

Sounds great. Curious to know if the latest updates will start updating like they used to? I've noticed that when I update it never shows that I did anymore.

Dragonaur at 1:55PM, May 29, 2016

Sounds good to me. I like the 4 month period for dead comics. Definitely 1 year. 1 month is seems too short. I've got a little side comic that I update very slowly. I think it's a good thing you've got to log in for the adult comics to see anything. Including them in the list does seem like the "right" thing to do. Tho' I wouldn't mind a check box I could check to remove them. ^_^;

KimLuster at 5:49AM, May 29, 2016

Great update!!!

Ozoneocean at 5:35AM, May 29, 2016

We need to have a talk about excluding Adult comics from the top ten. I thought it was a good idea myself, because that had already been the case for the last 2 years or so, but Pitface and Tantz Aerine thought it was censorship to do that. DD isn't a dictatorship so we're going to have to talk that one out.

Ozoneocean at 5:32AM, May 29, 2016

I spoke to Alexey a bit about user graphs- the trouble we have is database load and file space. We can't run more than one set of stats because of that or it slows down the site too much. We're only recording uniques for 4 days and then they're discarded, that way we get the average for the rank.

Bruno Harm at 5:11AM, May 29, 2016

Wow. That should shake things up a bit. Is there any chance you'll be adding a graph of Unique hits on the stat page?

Prototype at 5:11AM, May 29, 2016

Great update! :D Definitely exclude non-updating comics. 4 months seems reasonable. And could be even lower like 1 month. The top 10 should be a super active list. (right now there is a comic on the list that hasn't updated since 2014) Also, there is currently an adult comic on the top10 list. That could probably need a quick fix.
