Body doubling - how it can help you stay focused

Over the past few months, I’ve been logging onto a drawing hangout where we share our screens as we draw. There is no camera or mic. Just a chat and our screens as we scribble away. At first, I wondered how productive this could be. I figured it would be a huge distraction what with the chat going on and screens constantly moving.

However, this was not the case. In fact, I found that I was focused. Panels were being sketched and inked. What’s more, I found myself wanting to draw more often because I knew there would be someone there to keep me company.

A comic creator linked the video below.

Body doubling is a strategy a lot of ADHD Brains use to help maintain focus, particular if the task is repetitive or boring. And let’s face it. Sometimes comic creation can be repetitive or boring. Having someone there on the other side of the screen can help.

You can do this either through Zoom or other web conferencing programs. There is also a web browser based platform called, Drawingtime which is the one I use the most. You can also organise streams in the official DrunkDuck Discord server.

If you’re struggling to maintain focus, try this technique!

Have you ever had someone with you while you draw? Do you find it motivating or distracting? Let us know in the comment section below! And join us on Sunday evening for our Quackchat at 5:30PM(EST)!

Don’t forget you can now advertise on DrunkDuck for just $2 in whichever ad spot you like! The money goes straight into running the site. Want to know more? Click this link here! Or, if you want to help us keep the lights on you can sponsor us on Patreon. Every bit helps us!

Special thanks to our patrons!!

I don't have people I can chat with, but I also cannot focus in silence. I always have to put my ears/brain on something else while I write or draw. Usually TV, but a podcast works too.

The first time Toshubi & I got together for a drawing session was at a library and it was very weird to have people walking around while I'm trying to draw. Later sessions were easier, particularly because nobody seemed to care what I was drawing. People did like Toshubi's drawings though.
