Descent into the Crater

I reached the crater of the volcano after taking the winding road to the peak. My single sweater was not enough protection to go against the elements and I longed for the second sweater I left behind along with a pair of gloves. I held my knit hat close to my head otherwise the wind would have easily blown it off and the tiny particles of sand carried by the strong winds flew dangerously close to my face and I shut my eyes from the view to prevent anything going into eyes.

Eventually the force of the wind blowing in the opposite direction created too much of a resistance that I made the decision to walk back to the car and regain warmth before venturing out against the elements a second time.

I imagined Bilbo Baggins climbing Lonely Mountain and Frodo Baggins climbing Mount Doom with Samwise Gamgee. I wondered if any of them needed a second sweater to climb their respective mountains.

I've been on several volcanoes - I'm a geography teacher after all - but probably nothing that stunningly awesome. Saving on it, though.

I've only been once on the top of a vulcan (the Etna, in Sicily) and I remember it as a very weird place, extremely barren, almost like a lunar landscape.

Lovely pic! Makes you feel small.

The wife absolutely loved it up there. She has a thing for volcanoes. You have to go Volcano National Park on the Big Island. That's hot, barren with a mostly black landscape and looks just like Mordor. Some paths are often closed due to too much Sulphur in the air.

That is a very beutiful picture taken. I haven't climbed that many mountains in my life, but indeed a second sweater sounds like a good thing to have on a high altitude. And congrats to HawkandFloAdventure on the shotout👍
