Episode 448 - King of franchises: Star Wars!

Oct 14, 2019

Continuing on our focus on movie franchises for the month of October, THIS time we focus on the king of them all: STAR WARS! This was a genre defining series, not only for movies but for space opera, “SciFi”, and science fantasy on all media! The original trilogy was quite a milestone. Predictably further instalments weren't quite as well received but it still remains popular even so! Currently it's having a resurgence in popularity once more.

Topics and Show Notes

We on the Quackcast LOVE Star Wars because it's a beautiful teaching example for so many things about story creation: the hero's journey, story beats, plotting, world building, suspension of disbelief, lore building, climax, ending, beginnings, heroes, good, evil, villains, influences, inspiration, drawing from history and the classics, costume and prop design etc.
The original trilogy were not clever, advanced, intellectual films, rather they are very simplified in their structure and themes and this makes them perfect for looking at in terms of technique.

Conversely, the later Ja-Ja Binks trilogy is a great teaching piece for how not to make a story. It's muddled, without a clear direction, filled with poor dialogue, uneven plotting, too much deus Ex machina and coincidence, bad use of cliché, and just generally poor writing.

The newer films make great talking points but the entire series is great for our purposes because its reach is ubiquitous: most people have seen the films.

This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to The Shootin': Futuristic, down home country… echoes of Journey of the Sorcerer by The Eagles… This track brings to mind figures relaxing around a warm cheery campfire, lit by its feeble orange glow as they marvel at the vastness of the star filled blackness above them.

Quackcast 136 is hosted by the fine femme fatale Tantz Aerine with her amazingly attractive Greek accent! Tantz interviews Basil and Fotis, two characters from her comic; Without Moonlight. Without Moonlight is set during World War II, in Greece in the city of Athens under German occupation. We learn about with the population do to try and resist and survive in those terrible times and about some of the horrible things the occupying forces did. But we also see the heroism, the bravery and the good humour under stress shown by Fotis and his redoubtable groups of comrades. It's a fun, terrifying and exciting story about this very unique perspective on WWII. READ - http://www.drunkduck.com/Without_Moonlight/

Ozoneocean has an interview with his OWN webcomic character! The fabulous Pinky of Pinky TA comes to life for reals and submits to interrogation from her creator... The fourth wall is smashed wide open for this one as Ozoneocean tries to uncover the secret of Pinky's real hair colour and just what IS behind those bottomless pants? ...not much it turns out. This is an interesting experiment, trying to see how else you can explore and promote the imersive creative world that is your webcomic! For next week's Quackcast we would love YOU to submit your OWN character interviews, either as answers to the interview questions I have listed in the link bellow (in the forum), or just answers to questions you've invented yourself. You can even email a recording of it direct to me at ozoneocean at yahoo dot com.

Banes introduces the 2012 DD radio play! Maxwell McDuff must face his most diabolical trial yet in... THE DUCK ALWAYS QUACKS TWICE! He's joined by many other notable and fiendish characters in this new and epic adventure involving anvils, Maltese quails, crocodiles, and terrifying torture! This fine story was written by Gunwallace, organised heroically by Ayesinback and edited together by Banes. This story of the amazing Maxwell McDuff and many other characters was the product of many hours work and organisation by many different participants. Before the play there are some great interviews with members of the cast, but if you’d like to jump to the play, that starts at 38.41 minutes.
