[continued] we infer how his character is based on what he does in situations, and by sterilized interactions between him and characters with more personality then him. in fact all we see is the character he projects, which the reader knows is all an act to create an effect ('batman isn't a man but an idea'). of course batman is a corporate owned character and thus has been done differently by different people, some inject some personality into him, but by and large he is generic and bland. now i am not saying batman is a bad character or comic, in fact he is an example of what is typical for main characters in general, and especially in comic books. it is consistent for supporting characters to be more interesting and have more personality than central ones, and with character franchises as a supporting character become more central you'll typically see them become more and more sterile as time goes on.

now to be fair this is true of almost all forms of media. it is the result of designed projection. if your character is bland and empty, then the details of the characters are projected by the readers helping them to identify with the character and thus connect with the story. let's look at batman. he is a stoic character that typically doesn't use thought bubbles to work out what is going on in his head. his parents were killed, so he puts on tights and runs around the city they were killed in fighting bad guys. as for investigation goes (his strong suit) it is all done off camera by a side of him we never actually see. all super heroes run around with tights on fighting bad guys, so that isn't special, what is special is that his parents were killed right in front of him. so what makes him special is something that happened to him, not something he felt about what happened to him. I kept meaning to go back and re-word Lisa's blurb so it came off less harsh, but oh well. The review's sort of a dramatization anyway.

I simply love looking at the details in the artwork. Like the fact that Flame Thrower is drinking water while the others are drinking alcohol, or all the freckles on Flame Thrower. Yes, I focus on her. I'm biased.
